Hey all,
I hang out on VitalMX often but this is my first time posting- I know this isn't exactly motocross related but I figured most of us hit the trails from time to time anyway. I am trying to get the word out to get more feedback- thank you! More states are on the way

So there are two things I'm into- Dirtbiking and Android. A few months ago I decided to try my hand at learning a new skill:bonk:- I wanted to learn how to make an application for Android phones. Needless to say it was a humbling learning experience that often times had me literally banging my head against the wall.

I just finished my first app and of course- it's a dirtbike app! It's called Moto mApps. It lets explore new and old riding areas and lets you view the trail maps right on your phone. I made it because I got tired of fumbling with humongous paper trail maps on the trail trying to figure out where I was. I thought it would be useful on my own trail-rides and there aren't any apps geared towards off-road people like us.

I would LOVE feedback from more riders. Please be honest and maybe a little gentle as I had absolutely no experience with this whole coding/app writing business prior to making this sucker.

Thanks everyone- Enjoy!

Check it out from your desktop pc here- http://www.appbrain.com/...otomApps.Oregon.FREE

OR

Scan this whacky-looking barcode with your Android phone

OR

Just search for "Moto mApps" on your android phone.

There is a free and a paid version- The only difference between the 2 is the paid version has no ads and allows you to have off-line access to the maps. The free version requires a data connection everytime you view a map- try it out and see what you think- I am totally open to suggestions

Give me a break. The bar code you posted is for the pay version. The title of this message is "Please help me test out my Android app for dirtbikers". That sounds like you are begging us to help you test your app, which you admit is your first attempt at coding and you want us to pay for the privilege. That's like me going out and getting a paint by numbers kit after not having any experience in painting and expecting to get paid for it. I have a better idea, why don't you make it open source and license it under the GPL and I will help you write it and make it something worth while. Sorry if that is harsh.

You are totally entitled to your opinion friend- Like I said, and you said, this is my first attempt at an app. I didn't say it's perfect but I do think it's useful and it is much more than a paint-by-numbers process. I think it has a pretty slick UI personally.

Why don't you try out the free version before you say it sucks. If you still think it sucks then feel free to rip me a new one. If you like it then maybe you will spread the word. I am a moto guy with a full-time job, wife, and two kids. I ride my 06 YZ250 as often as I can occasionally race her.

Just don't knock it till you try it -

Oh and let me know the name of all the apps you've published- I would love to check em out.

Thanks

I've been doing this long before there was an Android. You'll find my name in the Linux kernel contributors list, without which there would be no Android, friend. Wink Oh, and STFU n00b!!!

Seriously though. Here is the first app I "published" back in 1979:

You are welcome. You may have missed it but I posted a link to my first app in the last message.

I down loaded the application and the only thing I saw after the welcome screen was a map. I was not able to change the size of the map. Basically it’s just an image of a map too small to read.

If you wanted to make this anything other than just an image of a map you might consider using GPS and cell tower location services to provide your exact location on the map and possibly where you have been, how far you have traveled and how far to your destination. Also it would be great to support the ability to enlarge and move the map around. Seems like it would be easier to download a .PDF map.

Nice try for your first project.

All the maps are totally zoomable and moveable-- just use pinch to zoom like you would with any picture or in the browser.

If you hit the menu button you can get directions to each area and a description of the area plus a link to allow you to use the maps off-line.

The GPS thing is a great idea - just a bit beyond my skills at this point- there will be future updates as I learn more though.

I appreciate you checking it out- if you wouldn't mind opening it back up and trying out some of those features I love to hear what you think- hit the menu button at the start screen for more options too.

THANK YOU

I just got the Droid X so some learning curve on installing the application was my problem. My first report was wrong since the application was not loaded! The application is pretty cool and works well. Could use GPS tracking to really make this something other than simply loading maps. The GPS would help in precise location and help in fuel estimates when on the trail or when lost or for rescue and emergencies. Is there a way to ditch the pop up ads and also not require loading the "3rd party loading app"? Pretty good for a first try.

Thanks for the feedback- I have some theories on how to make the gps work but I am a total n00b on the developing front. The paid version has no ads and does not require an internet connection to view the maps (only the first time). They are saved on your SD card in that version and load much quicker- plus you never know when you won't have service out on the trails. I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you refer to the "3rd party loading app". I do have a compass in the works so can at least find N,S,E,W out on the trails. Thank you very much for the input-- Arizona should be published next week- then I'm working on Washington- let me know if you are interested in whatever state you are in. Thanks again

The AppBrain company required thier application to be loaded prior to installing your app.

I see what you're saying- yeah I just used the AppBrain link so people could look at the app description on their desktop PC's. If you just open up the Market app on your phone and hit the search button and type in "Moto mApps" it will take you right to it. Thanks again
