Old Video CA Jam 1974

After watching that Journey video that Racer92 posted I thought I would try looking up some of the old video clips from the 70s . One clip that I found let me know just how old I am. It was a clip of Black Sabbath at the CA Jam in 1974. It was the biggest concert that I have even attended. To be quite honest, I don’t remember a lot about the event (way to much partying) other than I have never been around that many people in my life, and at the end of the show Deep Purple thrash the stage.

Ozzy looks like a teenage kid.

i was 11 then. diednt ted nugent play that show also.

I was there too. I dont remember much as Id been up all night stoned on .... I was so far back I couldnt see the stage but I did see a few nekkid women running around boobies a floppin and I seem to remember standing on the bank of the back straightaway pissing on the O of Ontario Motor Speedway.

I was also there many years later (early 80s) protesting the closing of the speedway by Chevron Oil. Ive still got the Boycott Chevron bumper sticker on one of my tool boxes.

The year before the closing I was going out there to watch Motorcycle road racing and thats where I got the bug to start my racing career or whatever you want to call it.

Nugent played the CA Jam 2. I believe it was in 78.

Oh great ancient ones...I was wondering how viewing and hearing the bands was in that sea of people. Do you recall how many people were estimated to be at that concert? If you were so far back not to be able to see the stage, how was the sound?

One of my first favorite bands was ELP. I found a bunch of vids of them playing that concert. Wow. Those were 25 year old "kids" who knew their way around their instruments and music like a bunch of mature virtuosos.

The attendance was estimated to be 200,000 and as far as the sound quality, it wasn’t bad if you were lucky enough to work your way up towards the stage. The people in the back were relying on “not so great” speakers mounted on poles. At one point of the show “Black Oak Arkansas” I worked my up with in 100 yards of the stage, but “supplies”starting running low so I had to retreat back to our area and replenish the supplies. I never made it that close again.

It was one giant party.
