Hello everyone,
First time posting here!
I have previously rode bikes from when I was 4-17years old I had the luxury of my dad fixing my bike for me.
I’m 24 now and looking to get back into bikes, I have a couple of questions.
I am looking to purchase a 2020 KXF250 I am going to view at the weekend, I have a few questions im hoping you can help out with.
1) the bike has 70hrs, is this a lot? If so, what would be required to get it safe to ride ( I don’t wanna blow it up) how many hours in should the top end be rebuilt?
2) is re-building a top end as straight forward as buying a kit and reading the manual? Or am I better putting it into a garage, what would the cost be ?
3) when inspecting the bike before purchase what are some things I could check to see if the bikes has had a hard life? (By the pictures of the bike it looks like it’s been taken really good care of but you never know)
4) if 70hrs isn’t a lot then when should I look to rebuild the top end, I don’t plan on giving the bike a hard time I’ll mostly be having fun maybe every 2nd weekend on a track and off road but I’ve not ridden in couple years so I’ll be taking it easy.
Thanks in advance for you help!
70hrs on a 250F I’d be looking to refresh top and bottom end.
Would refresh the head (valves and springs) new piston, timing chain, then replace connecting rod/crank and lower end bearings.
70 is nothing if not ridden by a really fast guy. I have that on my ‘21 and it’s like new. Now that is going to depend on how well it is maintained or if it had a hard life. A top end would be good insurance and may or may not be needed. Definitely suspension should be serviced if it has more than 10 hours to get it fresh. A valve check would be mandatory if never done.
Some bikes come from the factory near the limit. Muffler packing would likely be an issue.
Ask the seller what brand of Air Filter oil he used. If he doesn't know then don't buy it.
It doesn't matter which brand of af oil he was using but it is important that he changed the air filter often as a dirty air filter is the number 1 cause of premature wear.
You could look up the service manual or videos to see if you would be comfortable doing the top end on your own. In my experience it's better to try it and maybe mess it up, it's a great way to learn. It might cost a little extra if you break something, but it's cheaper than college.
As others have said, 70 hours is dependent on the user and their maintenance habits.
Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate it.
I will have a look into rebuilding the top end, I don’t think I’d have an issue with rebuilding it I just don’t really know what I’m looking for in case other parts are damaged or worn etc
