WOW, I never noticed how detailed alot of the Hot wheels stuff was.  I'll have to pay better attention when I'm at a flea market and see Hot Wheels stuff. 

 I came across a custom painted Thor helmet onetime.  It was painted like a NE pats helmet and was a gift to somebody at the stadium from the time that SX had the first race back in Foxborough . It had a legit paint job on it. I wish I bought it . I went back the next week to try and negotiate with the guy. I made the mistake of not bringing much cash with me when I was there the first time. And he wasn't there that week. It was a cheaper model helmet , the Paintjob and story were what gave it any value to me. He wanted $400 and it was not worth that to me. It had been out of a helmet bag and had light scratches.  

 

 I never really take a look at the Hot Wheels stuff. Just glance as I walk by. But I'll 100% be taking a good look and asking some of the dealers that have larger collections . Too bad they stopped making them.  I have some of the road champs bikes and a bunch of New Ray.

That sounds really cool! Yes I have some of the road champs as well but was always drawn to the hot wheels moto series as a kid they were built better too, but as an adult I really like how detailed they are and how they got a lot of the sponsors on the bikes and gear! 

Yah I was just old enough that I did not care about them as much, but not old enough to realize how cool they really are. The Road champs bikes I have were gifts , and I did not really think of collecting them at the time. I kept them by my trophy's for years and than as I got older I started to want to collect more. I make custom MX graphics for a living and I do replica bikes for customers of mine that have had real bikes done.  It takes too much time to offer custom kits on toys and design from scratch like I do on the real bikes. 

 

  But its been fun making more detailed replicas for the customers who are willing to pay a little more. I've taken them apart and painted plastic, frames, etc.  Colored shifters, levers, etc. to match the full sized bike as close as possible. I make decals for the seats or paint and decals sometimes. In my shop I made a bunch of 1/12th replicas of local customers bikes to hang as ornaments.  You can get away with just adding a hook . And You can buy the hooks in bulk very cheap.  The 1/32nd or 1/18th scale might work better depending on the tree. I just used the 12th scale since they come in the largest range of brands.

 I'm not trying to get more work doing them , I get too busy with them locally during the holidays. But I thought I might share how easy it is to make one of them into an ornament. And You can remove the hook and put it back on the shelf after You take the tree down. 

 

On this one I even put the customers face onto the cutout.  I'll look for pics of my tree with the bikes hanging and post too if anybody wants to see them. 

 

  Unfortunately 99% of my collection is newer and a lot of it is still available. So its not as impressive as the others posted.

Yes they do make some now but they’re pretty limited and pretty cheap/ generic than the old school ones lol but still better than nothing

That’s really cool! Not a lot of people have done customs I used to try to find someone that could do my old bike a while ago but stopped looking lol. That’s really what my goal is, is to have my own graphics business one day

If You want to do it only for making money, there is easier money in commercial stuff like truck lettering and banners.  But if You love the sport, and enjoy designing you can do ok .  These days You can find places that sell templates that will print and produce a finished graphic for you. So You could start out with less overhead. You would need a computer and design software minimum. Then templates for whatever bikes You want to do.  Starting out like that would be my recommendation. And buying a printer and the other tools You need after You get going enough to justify spending to get  the space  and tools top produce them totally Yourself. That way You can ease into the production part and not get stuck with 30-100K of equipment if You discover you don't really like doing it after a year. It is much less expensive to get into these days than it was when I started.  It takes up a good amount of space. To setup the printers and work areas.  You could do it in a 24x24 space but it gets tight and more space would be better. 

 

If You have no experience at all .  I would try and get a job at a local graphics shop. If there are not any around You, a sign shop that prints and cuts vinyl would be a similar process and similar tools to learn. A place like that would also be able to print on the materials You need to use and should know how to source them. They may have a harder time getting the cutting done . That  was the trickiest thing ,unless You have a flatbed cutter. Working at a sign shop will help You learn the flow for the entire process. It can be similar to the process of making MX graphics. Just a little tweak here and there . But the basics are all there.  And You would be getting paid to learn. Going to a school may or may not be a great idea. I've had people come and talk to me about working for me that went to some great art schools. and they could do amazing work. But they took too long to be profitable on some stuff, and it seemed like the did not really learn a workflow like You would at a working shop. They knew how to do stuff and use the tools. I also had some people that went to school and would have been great workers but the timing did not work out.  I think that a real sign shop environment will help you learn in the real word .

Thanks for the advice! My brother and I both have grown up racing and we both took some courses for graphic design during high school. We would like to do graphics maybe some car wraps and decals and maybe even some t shirt designs. He currently works at a local signs place and I currently work at a local school apparel/ sporting goods place where we do all of our designs/ embroidery/ screen printing etc. but we figured since we didn’t really major in any graphic design we would try jobs like these and take some classes online to learn anything else we may want or need

Thanks for the advice! My brother and I both have grown up racing and we both took some courses for graphic design during high school. You are off to a good start. If and when  You guys go out on Your own , You might want to do a little of everything until You find a good fit. I've always tried to do everything. And it makes it harder to scale up.  Find what You enjoy and can do well and try and make that a 100% focus.

Awesome, thank you!! I have most of those but am still interested in some. The Michael Bryne I have is more yellowed than yours, so I would be curious to know what you’d want for that one. Also curious for the McGrath with rider, both Yamahas and especially the Mike Brown one I saw in some of your first pictures if you would want to sell that one??
