I had a Klemm Research 105 that was super fast in 83. In 84 I had an R&D 105 that was real fast also. But to be honest, I think the Klemm bike was faster. The 83 stock Kawasaki 80 was definitely faster than the stock 84 Suzuki 80.

I raced a stock 83 KX 80 in 1983 after racing Yamaha's from 1980-82. I couldn't afford a new bike in 84 so we had it fully modified by Pro Circuit and it was more than competitive. Kept it as my modified bike in 1985 (when I got a new 1985 as my stock bike). That 83 was still one of the fastest bikes in the field no matter who was there. The 83 KX80 was a great bike, it was like getting a factory bike (to me after the 82 Yamaha). I couldn't imagine how good the 83 DMC KX 105 was! Only in my dreams....
However- in 83 I was really too grown for 80s anymore. Fortunately the 83 KX80 was tall enough to convince my Dad to milk another year out on an 80.
The 83 KX80 was a rocketship-- even stock. It also had way more bottom end then I think any 80 had ever had up till that point, which certainly helped lug my quickly growing patoot around the track!
Mine was fairly stock, with some mild engine tuning & the Klemm airbox that made a HUGE difference. Those boxes were also a nessesity not only in performance, but because cleaning the filter with the stock airbox was an absolute nightmare. I recall it was easier to remove the complete airbox to clean the filter rather than fighting that poor design. I certainly polished up on my young profanity in the garage with that stock airbox!
I also never rode a highly modified DMC/Pro Circuit/Etc 80, but I can say in my experience the 83 KX 80 was definately the fastest 80 I ever rode/owned.
