You had to know the Lexus guy was doing something wrong; the images he posted for the D3 were so bad. The Canon's image sensor could be sharper, but there's no way Nikon could sell even a consumer grade point and shoot with image quality as bad as what he was showing for the D3.

dpreview ... gimme a break . those guys also said the first run of canon 1dm3 didnt have a focus issue . see a pattern here ? the latest is the greatest because that is where the most ad money is going to come from .

Have you gone back and read the debate and analysis on the Lexus site since you first posted?

Eddie

That is hardly an objective test, he exhibited classic "fanboyism" and thats fine, but it doesnt make him right. the D3 is fullframe while the Canon is a 1.3 crop so he needed to change the FOV of the D3 to get a more realistic result, look at page 7 and eurolifes comments and his results. Im not sure what pro shoots text with a gazillion dollar lens ( especially since it isnt a brand specific unit ) but im thinking not many - Canon lenses are meant to be used with Canon bodies for a reason, as is Nikon... the communication between body and lens does have a factor, its this fact that makes the test flawed as well - too many variables, sorry

Also... the comment "the D3 is all hype" is hardly accurate - Dave Black who has shot for Time, Newsweek and is regarded as one of the best sports photographers in the world, hails the D3 as revolutionary - hardly a testimonial for a hyped up pos.

Percy is a moderator on a car forum - Dave Black...well, look for yourself http://www.DaveBlackPhotography.com who's word would you listen to more if you were being completely objective? check out "workshop at the ranch" before you answer.

Im not saying Percy didnt have a really cool lens and tried pretty hard to convince folks of his conclusions, there are simply too many variables that dont align with his test. and there are variables mentioned in that thread by other folks if you read it.

I agree with TOE.
I read thru the post and found later that he up resed the Nikon images to be the same size as the Canon images.. after all the hype and time spent testing he blew it in the final steps.. Real scientific..
As for the lens used. It is a refractor telescope, mind you that its a great piece of glass but as per the rest of the entire thread it also is hyped up.. I searched for the scope because I am looking for a nice one to play with Astro Photography and I found that scope for $4000.. Even tho thats a high price for a manual focus lens it no where near the price I was expecting it to be.

If you take the time and search out later in the thread you will find the same photos posted by others that are not manipulated and show a much closer comparison or the 2 cameras. what I saw in them was marginal at best.. The Canon did surprise me a bit with its ISO noise. I did not expect it to be as good as it was..

The last issue with this test is that fact that the images were not exposed properly. They were all under exposed and everyone knows that High ISO performance is affected by proper exposure. A perfectly exposed image will always be cleaner and have less noise. A under exposed image will always have more noise in it, the more the images is under exposed the more noise you usually get.

The only bad thing I think you can say about the D3 is that. To bad it doesn't have a larger sensor with more megapixeles..

TOE.. You get a D3 yet??
You remember when I said I was getting a 1D M3 ?? Well I am still waiting for the fixed one to become available..

BS thread title and you should try it before you believe what you read. shot with a D3, MK III 1D, and MK II 1D saturday, back to back, at the Dallas AX. I didnt have some kickass testing procedure like the lexus guy but a real world scenario for us mx peeps. Indoors, crappy lighting, fast action and nowhere to freaking stand. D3 at ISO6400 is comparable to the MK III at 3600, no bs. They both had noise but the D3 was much easier to deal with and the Canon had issues with noise in the dark areas. D3 produced a bit better color and it maintains color better at high ISO. I shot the entire main with no flash which was pretty cool Looks like Nikon finally got it right.

btw, i'm a canon shooter.

I had the D3 for a month and it is amazing. One of the best cameras of all time. I shot with the new 24-70, 14-24 and the 300 2.8 VR. The camera is awesome. I just did some bridals and had them blown up to 24x36 on canvas and they look amazing.

The D3 has lived up to the hype and even surpassed it.

Steve - nice post, Agree

No D3 for me, yet ... i tried the D300 and quite honestly, for SX...its more than enough in the high iso department, all other work i can do with my D2X. so im gonna cut myself some slack and get the D300 for now, then maybe in a year, shortly after the D3X comes out, i will get that for studio work provided its fullframe like the D3. Where you at in the world these days Homey?

Brandon, good to see you back around here posting, how is the wedding gig going for you? i saw your site awhile back, looks good.

Weddings are going great. I took the last 3 months of last year off to spend time with my new baby boy we had in November. I started booking last month and have already booked 18 for this year. I have a bridal show coming up Feb 9th so I am hoping to get a ton more during that. Weddings sure are stressful and keep you super busy with all the albums, prints and all that stuff they want but you can make some great money at it and I think it is super fun.

I miss moto though and would love to come shoot a race again. That D300 is rad huh? I shot a whole fight with one and all the shots were ISO 1600 and sharp as a tack. That D3 though is amazing. Seriously the best camera out there by far. I just wish I wasn't such a gear head and would stop swapping gear around and just keep something. The D3/D300 setup is one of the best out there. Try the two new zooms and you will be blown away.

Thanks Tony.
I am in Buffalo still until about the end of Feb. Maybe longer I will have to wait and see.
I did see the d300 posts and some photos taken with it.. Nikon owners that have it say it is the best digital Nikon has made yet.
Thats a bold statement but it just shows that Nikon actually hit one out of the park with that camera.

Canon has a leaked report that they are announcing their new cameras in about another week.. I am hoping the finally get the focus issues fixed for good and there is a strong possibility there will be a new 5D released soon.
Interesting for sure..

Hows your biz going out there? Your still in Vegas right?
Hows Donja and the kids?
