As far as the original topic here, there's a big difference between letting someone win, and letting someone go who you don't need to race with.

I was at both the races mentioned last year, and after James charged through the pack, it was pretty clear to everyone there that there wasn't much to be gained in Seattle by trying to chase down RV. Could he have? Possibly. But he'd have had to really hang it out to make up the gap to Ryan, which was still fairly substantial.

In Vegas? Stewart's focus was clearly on Reed, and doing what he had to do to win the title. That weekend it didn't include having to race with Ryan. Did he look like his normal self there? Not really.
