Okay, so ive finally decided im gonna buy a real dirtbike. After years of riding my pitbike and riding my friends big bikes I think its time to get my own. Now I have about 5 hours or so riding experience at the desert, not too much and I was wondering which bike I should get. I think im gonna go kawi but should I get a 250 or 450? Everyone gives me different answers. Some say ill regret the 250 when I get better, and others say a 250 will make me a better rider. Im 6 foot 4 around 200lbs, which bike would you guys recomend?

thanks.

If you're going to buy a 250, make it a 2 stroke. At your size and where you ride, a 250F would be a detriment, not something that would make you a better rider. On a MX track, there is a legitimate argument toward a smaller bore bike (particularly a 125 2 stroke), which forces you to use momentum instead of big hp to go fast and clear obstacles.

Either a 250/300 2-stroke or a 400/450 4-stroke. If money is of significance, look toward the 2 stroke as they're cheaper to purchase and maintain, not to mention lighter and not as loud. But for outright power and ride-ability in the desert, the 450's are tough bikes to top.

If I was going to buy a 4 stroke it would be a 250f. The 450 just has to much power. sometimes less is more. Just go to a race and watch how fast a 250f will go they fly. I have a 250 2 stroke and love it (YZ250) it has alot of power and i'm 6"1 230lbs race it in the +40 class and it will go as fast as I want to and then some. One major advantage to the 2 stroke is they are cheap to rebuild the top end not so on the 4 stroke. What ever you buy you can not go wrong. Get one and get out and ride.

If it's your first full size bike, avoid a 450. You'll be better off with either a 250F or a 250 2-stroke. The 250F will be easier to ride because it is slightly underpowered for your size, but that is a good thing while you are developing your skills. You'll be having fun instead of struggling to control 50hp.

I Agree with getting the 250f, Spring rates might be an issue, but you can always go up.

I don't think a 250f or a 450f would be a very good idea , with only 5 hours experience. You should be looking at something like this!
