I can see going to another hospital because hospitals can close to ambulances. But they don't transport based on insurance. That and not all hospitals are set up for everything. Some are cardiac specialists, some are trauma centers, lots of reasons why. Then again there are alot of ignorant disgruntled EMTs also.

Just think what it might have been like if you replaced the EMT's with the gov employee's at the DMV.... just sayn'.

I wasn't trying to be a dick I just don't know all of the info. I am confused as to why they took him there but I distinctly heard the shop guys telling the EMT's that hospital is part of our plan and the other is not. IDK if that was the deciding factor or not. He was way past the point of answering any questions when I got over there. I work in the office and was one of the last company people to respond. (I was probably on Vital) anyway he had been breathing for quite some time when they put him in the Ambulance.

Bummer. It makes you wonder if the hospital is only 3 blocks away that you couldn't have gotten him there in a car by the time 911 was even dialed. Problem with that is liability moves from EMT to you in that case.

We definitely would have had a better chance of saving him if someone had thrown him in the back of their truck and took him. for sure but hindsight is .....well hind sight.

Definitely. It just might be something the rest of us should think about in case we are caught in a similar situation.

As a former EMT in the state of TN. Unless the laws have changed, this man's condition would be considered emergency status and thus should be transported to the NEAREST medical trauma facility and I believe Erlanger is a level 1 trauma center.And was the EMT's that responded a private Ambulance provider or Chattanoga/Hamilton Co. EMS? As far as the defib goes, simple, 2 patches, white on right and other on left, attach paddles,clear,await instructions,then activate. Sorry to hear about your co-worker.

The company is going to go ahead and pay his salary for a while to help his family. The Dr. said there was nothing anybody could have done it was a MASSIVE heart attack. I guess none of it matters at this point. It did make me wake up to the fact that I need some training. I am CPR certified but I guess need to go again.
