So I'm the girlfriend of a guy who rides a 450 doing freestyle (no racing), and his birthday is coming up... I'm new to the whole motocross scene, and don't have any friends who ride, so I'm hoping that I can talk to people here about it!

I want to get him a new helmet and boots because his are jacked up, but I know nothing about what brands are best or what to look for, and don't really trust anybody I talk to in the stores because I know that they're there to sell whatever they can, not give sincere advice.

My budget is around $500 total... idk if I should just spring for some sick boots or a really good helmet, or get him both, because he really needs to replace all of the above.
Any help/advice would really be awesome... Thanks in advance!

Bring in another girl! Ha Ha just kidding! 500 bucks is good for a helmet or boots one or the other! Go for top of the line stuff. Never got a bigger rush then when my girlfriend gave me riding stuff! Were married and two kids now good luck!!

Look around on Ebay or some of the moto retailer's. You could get some closeout Gaerne SG10's for about 289 and a closeout Bell Moto 8 for about 199.

Boots- the SG10's are highly rated, the Sidi Crossfire's are probably the highest rated (and you may struggle finding a great deal on them), and the Oxtar Pro 2 or Oxtar Comp 2 boots are great- and you can often find super deals on them.

Helmet- The Moto 8 is a nice lid, as are the Troy Lee Designs. Arai's are generally considered the best, but you will likely find $ to be an issue.

E-bay, and do Google searches for closeouts. If the local dealer is reasonably close in $, it's always best to support them- plus if what you buy doesn't fit or he doesn't like it, returns are much easier.

Looks like he wears fox gear while shredding gnar, the Fox V3 is a good quality helmet. As far as boots you can't go wrong with Gaerne SG10.

Thanks for that link... I went and snuck a look at his gear, and he has a Fly helmet that's still in good condition, and then FLY Viper boots that look like hell... I think I'm getting him some new boots!

If you are going to just get the best of one... then..

Gearne SG12 boots (about $400)
SHOEI VFX-W (about $400)

Do a search on Ebay and you can find all this stuff.

I just bought this stuff for my son

I say get him the SG12 boots and let him get his own helmet

best deals on closeout Bell helmets here:

http://www.bellhelmets.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&catego…

I use the 7R because it fits my head. For both boots and helmet, fit is critical so you have to make sure he likes what you get or he can exchange it. Not sure if they do that on the closeouts.
