I Started this build a while ago but didn't take the time to start a thread on it. I purchased the 1999 from a kid that destroyed the frame on his 1992 YZ. Nice kid but didn't appear to get much help or guidance from his bum of a father. I met the father while picking up the bikes. I felt bad for the kid and gave him full asking price. Look at the rear portion of the frame on the blue bike, repairs don't get much more ghetto than that.
I didn't get any info on where he got the 99 from but, the 99 had a broken case where the clutch cable entered. Apparently the kid decided that the case on the 99 would be too difficult to fix and chose instead to try to put the 92 engine into the 99 frame. That didn't work out so well. The engine did sort of fit, the axel/swingarm pivot and the front engine mount lined up but the lower cradle mount was short by about an inch. The biggest hold up for the kid was the pipe. It didn't come anywhere close to fitting.
The engine for the 99 was laying in the dirt when I picked up the bikes but other than the broken case it looked salvageable. The bikes on the trailer are as I received them. What a mess.
Unfortunately I lost some of the early teardown photos due to a computer crash but there are enough to get the general idea.
The first thing was to get the bikes cleaned up as well as possible at the car wash. After getting them home I disassembled the 99 removing the 92 engine and installing the 99 engine for mockup. The only real issue with the 99 frame was a missing exhaust mount. I ordered up a DEP bare pipe along with an FMF spark arrestor/silencer (we have to have the spark arrestor in Nevada to ride on federal lands) and new exhaust bracket to use for mockup for the new exhaust mount. Had a buddy weld it up for me.
I found a set of 2009 YZ450 forks on Ebay and ordered them in. I used a 2006 WR450 lower triple along with a 2018 Upper. I wanted the 2018 upper for the rubber mounted handlebars. I had the upper triple machined to match the lower triple. There was just enough room to increase the size and correct the different spacing to match the WR lower. The 2018 shares the same 25mm offset as the 2006 lower.
I made a frame stop to match the new triples and had the same friend weld that up.
I plan on building a Bradshaw “themed” bike using his graphics from the 1993 works bike. I always liked the look of that bike, it screams 90’s. I was inspired by some previous builds here on vital. I want to upgrade the bike with modern suspension and brakes. This is going to be a desert bike that I have every intention of riding.
