They called on Thursday of last week and said they were picking it up Monday. I told them they better have their paperwork in order, called the PD of the local town it was supposedly stolen from and told them the same thing. I haven't heard from them this week.
Hold their feet to the fire on the paperwork deal. Cops will come in like their judge and jury but in most cases they are trying to make you do something on your own and to make it easy on them. All this action from the other side claiming they are in the right. Squeaky wheel like someone said. Just don’t hand it over with nothing to prove it isn’t yours. Stand your ground.

Sounds like a scam to me. The person you bought it from is in the clear because they say it was left by a deceased relative.....can't arrest a dead guy.
The person who said it was stolen from them lives in a different town so there's enough distance from them and the person who sold it to you, they're probably friends of friends......nothing there to connect the two of them.
The seller invites you to the house and writes up a bill of sale, doing all the right things to make it look legit so they can be a victim too.
They get the money and the bike back.....split the money....buy some meth or whatever they are into, lay low and in a year or two pull the scam again.

Tweakers don't usually plot schemes that include intentionally involving the police in the plan.

Just as likely they simply stole the bike and made up the story about the dead relative. In that scenario does the original owner not deserve their bike back?

Not a lot do sympathy in this thread for a hypothetical genuine owner who's bike was stolen. Not hard to imagine someone owning a vintage bike like that with no paperwork and not having the VIN written down anywhere.

I would think a legit owner with all the proof would have his bike back by now. That hasnt been the case yet from what i see.

When I started to fight back a little on our last conversation he kind of stopped me mid sentence and said "Look man it's stolen". I don't want to pretend to be a legal expert but I didn't know he could just make that decision, I would think a judge would have to decide. But again I'm no expert.

But yeah they told me last Thursday they would be picking it up on Monday, they haven't picked it up yet.

I'd have a little more sympathy if they treated the guy that paid twice what the bike cost new, got documentation of the sell etc. like a victim instead of just telling me "Yeah well that's what you get into buying this stuff".

Maybe the owner doesn't have proof. It's not uncommon for old bikes like that to have zero documentation.

Remember the person OP bought it from also presented zero proof of their ownership either.

So we're saying there's only 1 guy that can prove he paid a damn thing for it...

He can’t make that decision. I’ve had experience with a similar situation and the cops pulled the same exact thing. They are working for whoever cries the most until they finally give up if you dont concede and let the COURT decide.

It just seems fishy. The people I bought it from knew it had value, I didn't give $200 for it. I would not have even thought to ask for a bill of sale. The lady actually said here let me write you a bill of sale. Her story was it was a family members who passed away. We didn't meet up at the corner of some gas station, I went to her house and bought it.
Ask for money back and return bike or you are calling the cops, pressing charges etc…..sidestep this hassle.

I had made a post in a vintage FB group looking to trade it for a GP or Ultima era ready to ride bike. I formatted the ad in such a way it created a marketplace post.

Keep possession of the bike until there is a legal action or recourse in place. You've been honest and forthright with the fact that you weren't the one who allegedly stole it - and you have proof you paid for it. There's no proof it was stolen that I have seen.

Was there a police report filed or an insurance claim from the original owner who is now claiming it was stolen? If I had a bike stolen, rest assured there would have been a police report and an insurance claim. At the very least a police report.

If there was no original police report from when it was originally allegedly stolen, then it ain't stolen.
