I've heard from someone that was there, it was a heart attack... not a crash injury.

Just what I've heard.. can't confirm.

Dude chill out. Everyone here has nothing but respect for the guy and his family. Speculating that he may have had a heart attack is not disrespectful. Physical health and conditioning do not preclude the possibility of a heart attack. Perfectly healthy marathon runners have had a heart attack and it can happen with no warning signs.

Condolences to the family and friends. Sounds like he was a GREAT person. RIP.

Right now I don't have much to add to what my wife wrote to tell our nieces and nephews, who knew Chumbley , from working over the years at our track.

"Sorry I have to give you bad news, but Terry Chumbley died this Monday at Millville. We were up there with him. He and Jim were racing the last moto of the 50+ class and Chumbley crashed after swapping, approaching the tabletop before the big triple (after the whoops.) He hit his head hard on the side, and pretty much quit breathing by the time they got him off the track. They did CPR for about an hour. They had a helicopter from Mayo, but didn't use it. They canceled the rest of the races. It was the first death at Spring Valley. Jim talked to him up on the jump before they brought him down. He was out of it but conscious. He moved his arms and legs, so I don't think he was paralyzed. He might have had a heart attack which caused the crash, or there might have been internal injuries. Autopsy was yesterday or today.

We've pretty much been in shock. I feel so bad for Jim after losing Bob Palmer in September, and Bob Hefner in CA shortly before that. Chumbley was his 'heavy metal motocross buddy,' and the main friend for traveling to races. Chumbley did have a great weekend racing. He'd hurt his ankle, but had been pleased with his riding. He and Jim and Bonnell had plans for going to the Regional Qualifier at Millville next weekend, and then a Vet National the weekend after that. You know this won't change any of Jim's plans for racing. He'll probably even go more. When we were sitting at Montezuma Sunday afternoon deciding to go to Millville at Chumbley's urging, Jim told me, 'You know Terry doesn't hesitate to just go. He appreciates the freedom to do it. We should be more like that.' I agreed. We stayed at the track another night and came home yesterday. We've been remembering Chumbley stories and idiosyncrasies nonstop between phone calls. Word gets around fast in the motocross community; many people are calling.
Enjoy your memories of him.

love,cathy"
Cathy,

Thanks for everything you and Jim have done. Im so glad you guys were there for him. Any ideas about Terry's bike? Out of respect for Terry, I would like to see it retired and not raced anymore. Jim Hickman has a great idea. Buy the bike from his family, drain the gas and have it on display. I would be willing to put up $100 for the cause. I know Terry's sister has a donation going for the family, but this could be a way to raise money for them and keep his memory alive. Jim shared this idea with me yesterday. I'm just trying to find a way to get Jim's idea out there to see if others will support it as well.

They did a raffle at Cedar Rapids Saturday nite for Terry. They Rafled off a set of Answer or MSR gear and all the proceeds from the Raffle are going directly to Terry's Family. Thought that was really cool and showed great resprect .

When I saw this post it was hard to click on, but I did anyway.

I didn't know Terry, but he sounds like he was a great guy and was still my moto brother.

RIP

What an awesome link 425! Terry was always a hard charger. I won't dispute that he loved his music but I've also seen him saw off part of a cast so he wouldn't miss a Sunday of racing. His new gear made him look like a white knight on that Honda.

I remember seeing him shred through a moto, coming in 1st or 2nd. He'd get off his bike and strut by a bunch of pretty girls and trip over his own feet. Instead of being embarassed he'd laugh that big laugh of his and make a joke.

I think Hickman's suggestion about donating money to buy the bike is a great idea. I would totally put in $100.

What wonderful people you all are to show such love and respect.

That is classic Chumbly "he was a trip". Pass the word about Hickmans Idea. Flynn Elder has verbally comitted $100as well. I will use this forum to generate a list of interested doners. It will take a little time for the family to determine how to liquidate his bike. Keep ya posted.

LOL your fault for parking in a fire zone... wait... we hadn't even barely started our fire when you left... you should have seen it about 2 in the morning! We were heating John and Greta's house! you couldn't stand within 20 feet of it! It was nice seeing you up there! We had a great weekend, not the results he had hoped for but you can't crash EVERY moto... Still fun!

Did you have a permit for the SOB? Looked like a lot of fun.

Your #30 was riding well, just a little miscalcuation here and there. Easy to do on that track, especially if you don't ride there regularly.

I'll look forward to our next track visit together. Glad you guys had a good time.

yep, same as every regional every year, local guys always have an advantage, after the freaks of nature like Wilson and Anderson. Nick Jackson was hauling ass until he decided to flop around on the ground like a fish outta water!

He's been doing great all season.

That was a bad one! Broke the femur, and the hip socket. Lots of surgery and recovery time for Nick. Big time bummer for a nice kid that was riding very nicely.

No doubt Jim's fed you over 30 cheese burgers during the past year, so consider that debt paid in full. Hopefully Jim will get a call in the near future and they will want to know if he would like to buy Terry's bike . Lets just help Hickman to say SURE!

All that said throw your $100 in Breck!

Agree, Im sure he will be watching. Better do it before Jim drains the gas. Oh buy the way, it will be a pay before you play, in case you crash! You understand.

News in from medical examiner from MN Terry did succomb to accident related injuries. His aorta was ripped from his heart in the impact and bled to death internally. So the heart attack story and rumors are now squashed.......Either way I still can't believe he is gone........

I am sorry to hear that.

As for the one gentleman who freaked out because the term "heart attack" was even mentioned because of how good of physical shape his buddy was in, it doesn't matter.

People have heart attacks, even people in excellent physical shape.

The man who practically revolutionized and/or introduced the concept of running for exercise, writing the book, "The Complete Book of Running, JIM FIXX died of a heart attack after one of his daily runs.

Heart attacks happen.

Many on this forum remember a dear forum member, Marcad, who died in his chair at the track between practices. Marty (Marcad) may not have qualified for a Mr Universe contest, but he was in decent shape and rode weekly...MX was what he lived for. He was at the track, got done with a practice and sat in his chair resting....and he died.

Just died

I am sorry to hear of this man's passing, but people need to realize that good health is no guarantee of eternal life and the hissy fit by his friend a page earlier was uncalled for

I still miss, Marty

Other than an Ei sticker, the only other moto sticker on my vehicle is my "57 Marcad" tribute decal.

Nothing else

(BTW, he put that and the RacerX stickers over the urinals in a bar, that's why that's a funny picture....you had to be there)

Terrible news. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but I've seen Terry ride many times at Millville and he was a great rider. RIP brother.

Terry’s family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has expressed their condolences to us for Terry’s loss. We wish we could send a personal note of thanks to everyone who sent a card or letter, flowers, or a donation to Terry’s kids, but we didn’t get everyone’s address so we’re hoping our thanks can reach at least some of you through this and other posts.
It has been just overwhelming to see how many great friends Terry made over the years in Des Moines and all over the country. Terry had one hell of a run. No doubt about it. If we keep him in our hearts he will still be with us.
God’s Speed to each of you and God bless you all!
