Picked up a 2014 YZ450FEW for a whopping 4k. Definitely over paid, but I haven't been on a bike since my father passed away in 2016 and we had to sell his bikes, unable to afford taking them, having just gotten out of the Air Force with $18k in credit card debt. Yes, I know, I've made a lot of poor choices along the way.
The guy I bought it off of, who was the second owner, said it was well maintained, which it looked like in the pictures, and when I saw it in person I could tell he had dumped it a few times so it didn't look like he was trying to hide much. Except for the fact that he had run the engine for a WHILE before I got there, I could feel the crazy heat coming off but man she turned me and I just needed her.
I had it sitting a couple days until I could pick up a stand, and after the second day noticed the right fork was leaking. ๐ ๐ Because of that, I decided to just throw her up on a stand, and start pulling her apart to give her a thorough cleaning and see what else may be wrong. As I take more off, I have started to gather the story of her past.
I'm assuming the first owner raced her, because of the way the sprockets are worn as if he was always gunning it, and the number decals had been removed from the bike. I think the first owner took pretty good care of her, or else I think a lot more would be wrong. The second owner however, very clearly did not perform any maintenance other than probably spraying her down the day he put up the pictures. The first thing I saw was the air filter, which looked like it hadn't been changed in at least a year. I think the second owner got a bike too big for his britches and spilled hard, had something fuck up from not maintaining it well, and got rid of it. He said he wanted to upgrade to a 2019, but im pretty sure that was just his cover lol.
Been cleaning her up and draining all the fluids, so I can just start from the base and eliminate any of those issues immediately. I don't see anything else major thats wrong....yet. Any general advice on making your baby feel loved again after a shit bag owner? I'm following the maintenance checklist from Braapacademy.com, as well as what is in the owners manual. Hope I can do Yasha some justice, and really have some fun with her.
