Garbage disposers

Anyone know anything about them?

My house came equipped with an InSinkErator Badger 1 when I bought it some 18 years ago. Yesterday it up and died. Not jammed (checked with the wrench--turns freely), reset button has no effect. Flip switch and it makes a humming noise. No motor noise at all.

So I looked online and I can get another Badger 1 at Lowes for $70 or thereabouts. I was thinking I should be able to just buy a new one, remove the old one and replace it.

But then I saw how many other models there are. I understand that a Badger 5 upgrades the 1/3 HP motor to 1/2 HP. And there's a Badger with a 1 HP motor. That gets you up to $140 or something. But then they have other models that are upwards of $300 and $400. What is in those that makes them cost so much?

Bigger motors and quieter equal more loot... $70 over 18 years is 3.88 per year.

I'd replace with the same unit unless you've had problems. Super easy to do.....

I wouldn't go spend crazy. You would be happy if the old was still working. Unless there something you need that it didn't do, just replacement in kind.

Stay with the 1. Easy to replace. If your dishwasher drains into the GD, make sure you knockout the plug inside the connector on GD. Just in case you didn't already know.

I am a cheap fucker I would just replace the motor it is easier than the unit,3 wires and one clamp, and if you have no leaks ?

They have the dishwasher going into the other sink's drain. But yes, I knew that was a possibility.

So either everyone here is cheap like me, or basically the $400 disposers are for the same people who buy 24" chrome spinners for their Navigators.

Remember Ivan's plug advise, every time I've replaced one, I've forgotten that little tid-bit, and my wife gets pissed because the dishwasher didn't drain...DAMMIT!!! If you decide to go with the Badger 5, the head is exactly the same as the 1 so all plumbing will match perfectly. If you switch brands, you might have to adjust the length of the drain pipe. making it longer will require another trip to the hardware store, and if you're anything like me when it comes to plumbing, one trip will not be enough.Wink

As for the priceier ones, they're quieter, and chop stuff up finer. If you've got decent drains I'd stick with the Badgers. I got 15 years out of one, and only had to replace it because one of my kids decided to see what a 1" diameter rock would do in it...It blows the side out in case you wondered as well.

Yes I have ran some broken glass down one when I did have one.Huh
