The reports are in and they are not surprising.
Alcohol is responsible for millions of cases of disabling mental illnesses. Often overlooked, one factor affects 100 percent of alcohol users: frontal lobe impairment. The neurotransmitter responsible for halting an action or nerve impulse in the brain is known as "gamma-aminobutyric acid" (GABA). Alcohol blocks the action of GABA at the nerve junction, enabling you to do things you rconscience wouldn't normally allow. This results in an increase of risky behaviors, aggression, and impulsivity. Eventually these actions become habitual. The more time a neuron carries out an impulse, the more likely it is to allow the same action again.
The results can be lethal: One recent study revealed that alcohol intoxication increases the risk of suicide by 90-times ! Worse yet, alcohol can alter neuron DNA, thereby passing brain damage down from generation to generation. Many social drinkers mistakenly think that alcohol makes them more confident. The truth is that they become a passenger, and not the driver. If you value your ability to make rational decisions, steer completely clear of alcohol.
But isn't alcohol good for my heart? Alcohol is toxic to the heart muscle. How then does red wine seem to reduce heart disease risk? The red grape! Grapes contain flavanoids which have health-promoting effects. Any benefit from red wine is actually coming from the grape, and not the alcohol. Grape juice has even better heart benefits without the toxic side effects of alcohol. Drink up and drink healthy.
“But I only drink in moderation.” Alcohol is responsible for up to 30 percent of the worldwide incidence of esophageal cancer, liver cancer, liver cirrhosis, epileptic conditions, automobile accidents, and homicides. In fact, alcohol consumption is a likely cause of more than 60 different types of diseases and disabilities. It is estimated that alcohol use results in 1.8 million deaths annually worldwide. And heavy drinkers are not the only ones affected–social drinkers die younger than non-drinkers.
Alcohol is not a harmless social beverage, but rather a mind-altering addictive drug. It is a mistake to suggest that drinking alcohol is nothing more than a benign personal choice. Alcohol consumption is involved in half of all murders. Half of violent crime, one-third of all child abuse, one third-of all suicides, more than half of all domestic violence incidents, half of all traffic deaths, and a large portion of unwanted pregnancies, sexual assaults, and divorces! It is the world’s most destructive drug and costs US taxpayers nearly $200 billion a year!

i wish he would have done that years ago
I'd be willing to bet that this is based on how many suicides were found to have alcohol in their systems at autopsy..
These are people who were going to off themselves any way, but needed a few shots of courage to actually do it.
In a way, I guess it makes sense, but the context of the article makes alcohol sound more like a cause than a part of the process.
fuck you
run, Forest, run
Maybe you misunderstood his intent
and no, I don't buy the idea that he gets to make comments like that BECAUSE he in recovery
if anything, he ought to know better
Fucking crybabies. Just because you can't handle it, don't fuck it up for the rest of us.

As far as large people go, I dont believe I have "much" of a problem with anyone large. While its true Ive never dated a large woman and am only drawn to petite women it doesnt mean I dont have large women friends. I just dont happen to want to get all jiggly with them. Id guess half of my male friends are large guys. The rest of my male friends happen to be athletes and because of that most dont have weight issues. In fact a pretty strange thing about me is I watch all the large people shows. "Inside Brookhaven" "Biggest Loser" all the one offs like the worlds largest man who lives in mexico, the series about the 1000 lb man the 500 lb teenager etc. Id bet I havent missed a show. Not sure why Im drawn to those shows I guess I just like seeing what can happen to the human body in both directions. The diversity of the human race weather it be size, religion, cultural norms etc all intrigue me. How about you? Theres something you may notice about Vital. Many on here seem to want everyone to be just like them, to vote for who they vote for, to listen to the music they do, to watch the shows they watch, they'll argue for the sake of arguing. Its almost as if they dont want nor enjoy diversity. Know what I mean?
I also just a year back ran a walking/running class for people who wanted to get in shape and lose weight. I ran the class for 1 year and had to shut it done finally when I about went broke. I was charging $40 for 10 weeks of instruction. ($4 a saturday.) LOL yeah I was rolling in dough. At any rate almost to a person all my students were overweight women looking to get fit and lose a few lbs. Not sure why Im telling you all of this. Guess I just like to talk.
Id guess that like you I too am upset when I hear guys get down on people simply because they are big, if that is, they are being mean and are serious about it. Not to say I havent made a joke about being large but then I make jokes about being skinny and bald too. (both of which fit me)
I do also make jokes about alcohol consumption. Daves correct I am a recovering alcoholic. And its something that Im proud of. On this past April 1st I had my 30th sober anniversary. I think thats pretty cool. But I dont expect nor want anyone else to quit drinking unless they have a problem with it. And I wouldnt want to date a woman who didnt drink if you get my drift.
Ive also had 3 DUI's in my life. Ive rolled a van, crashed another van into a telephone pole. I crashed a sports car head on into a parked truck. Crashed another car head on into an armco barrier at the end of a dead end street. Ran a Impala over a steep incline about 80 feet down into a stand of trees. All under the influnce. I have had my license revoked 3x, Spent countless years on probation and done more weekends in jail that I care to count. And one time had to take a 13 week course on Alcohol as part of my sentance.
I will however also make jokes about it. If youve been around here long you must have heard me say that "Beer is for those that cant handle reality" I know Ive said it more than once. And each time it was a joke. It was a play on that old saying about people taking drugs because they couldnt handle reality.
Anyway there you go. Now Ive got to go fix the back tire on my MTB. Got a flat yesterday. Peace doug
apology accepted
I just think that if you'd said the same thing about, say, Cystic fibrosis, people would be screaming bloody murder. the two guys that I know that died couldn't stop drinking even though their life depended on it.
Gerry's using science now!
Next thing you know, we'll have him believing in evolution.
Anyone can quit IF THEY REALLY WANT TO QUIT
And thanks to all you guys for the props. Means alot to me to hear that.
Didnt mean to go on and on, but its coming to a head, and I cant have it both ways. Tonight I have a six pack and half a pint of Vodka in front of me, I will kill that no doubt, and maybe shoot up and get another 1 or 2 24oz's, and then spend all day tomorrow telling myself I wont drink again until the weekend- but probably wont succeed.
