does anybody remember a late 1960's "scrambles" held in Leesburg, Florida - I recall Barry Higgins coming down and kicking butt in the open class. As I recall, he drove a BSA Gold Star for Ghost, wore a sleeveless undershirt, and ran most of the race without a seat! And still ran off and left everyone else.

You are probably remembering "Gumbo Speedway" which was in Leesburg. The track was basically flat and went through some woods - and they ran at night. It was good tacky clay until it got wet, then it got so slick you couldn't even walk on it. I raced there on 100s a couple of times in 1970. It was an interesting place because you actually had some mixing of flat-track guys and early motocrossers which also happened occasionally at Barberville and Callahan. By and large we did not mingle, though. The two cultures were just too different - crackers and hippies.

Barry Higgins might have been able to win in the 500s, but in the 250s he would not have had much luck. Gumbo was ruled by a guy named Dorsey Fields who rode a purple Pursang. He was hard to beat anywhere he raced.
