I have a 2011 crf 250 that is an absolute pain in the ass to start. I just checked the valves yesterday. They are in spec. The spark plug has less than 2 hours on it. After you get it started for the first time in a day it's usually fine. Does anybody have any ideas about a solution.

In order to try and help you I have a few questions....
1. How long have you had the bike?
2. Are you getting a good Blue spark at the plug?
3. How old is the fuel in the tank?
4. Has the fuel pump filter been cleaned?
5. Have the valves ever been shimmed?
6. When was the last top end job done?
7. How many hours on the bike?
8. Has the injector been cleaned?

What he said^
I've found that often a bike that starts okay when warm but not when cold is often low on compression.
Worn rings, recessed valves and out of spec compression release all come to mind.

My 2011 CRF250 was a huge PITA to start from the day I brought it home from dealer, routinely taking 20+ kicks to start. I tried every trick in the book and, after almost 2 years, finally solved it. It turns out that the throttle cables were slightly out of adjustment and the throttle valve was always slightly open. After I adjusted it correctly, the bike was a 1 or 2 kick starter, hot or cold.

THANKS!!! I had the same problem with my 2005 Montessa Repsol Honda EFI 250 trials bike, just needs to have throttle closed all the way. Another recommendation was to confirm fuel pump pressure as pump diaphragms are known to leak.
