I am skilled and mechanically inclined just familiarizing my self with the machine.
Dude no one is calling you retarded. No offence but you being in the army or being a great shot has absolutely no bearing on how well you can work on an engine. The reason a few people including myself have expressed concern is because you shouldn't be working on an engine given some of the questions you are asking as they are basic/beginner questions.

If you want to learn how to work on an engine watch plenty of videos and even sit with someone else while they work on one to learn the ins-and-outs. You're talking about doing maintenance work that may not even need doing and in adjusting your cam chain so early you could end up causing further damage.

Do what you will but you have had plenty of advice from multiple people. I would never do any work to an engine without a service manual no matter how much I knew so make sure you always have it handy when you're working on the bike.

Yep. Nobody is saying youre stupid. The problem is you are given answers and resources and you arent using them. That needs to be fixed before you start doing anything. Idk about anyone else but in school it was drilled jnto our heads we need to research and do everything possible before we asked someone for help.

In the military I was a construction mechanic but most all mech work was done on summers and tanks so all deisle engines
