1988 CR250 questions

I found one for a good buy, all original, these are the bikes I grew up on, always rode Honda's from the mid 1980s to the late 90s, but never owned an 88. Just wanted to know what the vitards could tell me about it. Would like to throw it in some modern classes, and some vintage stuff. I had an 87 and it was great, and wondered if this is comparable. Detuned 87 motor in an all new bike for 88. Terrible suspension compared to the 87.

Agreed.. rear shock on the Euro bikes was way too hard, power was way too soft, only bike I ever got port work and a pipe for. Revalved the rear, and it was great .

nice, I would check i think it was the lower shock bolt was updated, buying the 89 bolt solves the problem. foot pegs were a bit narrow, Suspension, get it sprung and valved for your weight should be good to go. My friend had an 88 I had an 89. very close 89 had more motor nikasil cylinder fast for it's day. The 88 with some work is just as good as anything till around 93, maybe even further. there are quite a few around here that have re-done the 88's so peek around

In the process of restoring one I bought a couple of years ago. I would say I am about 80% finished. One of the best looking dirt bikes ever made, in my opinion!

Other than the side panels, it looks pretty original.

I would check for waterpump rot in the clutch cover despite the appearance of low hours on the bike just to be safe.

Ya the side panels are supposed to be red, and the water pump is fine. I was worried about that to. But it's in awesome shape otherwise.

These are nice bikes bought one new that year when I was in grade 11, traded it in out in Kelowna BC around 91 on a KX 125. Still have this one that I ice ride sometimes.
