Why doesn't plastic companies do this?

Is it possible to use a 3D printer/Rapid prototype machine to make the mold of each part of the plastic kit, the 3D printer could create a wax/resin mold that you could use to cast a permanent external metal mold that would be used permanently to injection mold the plastic kit into?!? I've seen it done in the jewelry business repeatedly and the quilty and attention to detail are secound to none, the produced products on the jewelry side sell for well over $50k, I'm saying that as an example of the 3D printers ability. I know that the initial investment might be costly ($27k-$55k est.)but to me creating a start up or this level of add on for commercial consumer manufacturing biz isn't always going to be cheap. Don't get me wrong altho I work in the proximity to the 3D print process is not my actual job and I might be missing something that would make it impossible or not feasible that's why I worded it as a question so anyone that can shine some light on it pleas do. Thanks
