What blasting media do you use? I was under the impression sand was to harsh for aluminium?

Glass media. It's not too harsh.

I have the same blaster, and like you also said best money ever spend !
Did every cast aluminum part of my build, it does the job 100%.

Only minor is mine is leaking like hell and the dust is everywhere in the shop, but i don't blame the quality of the blaster ! I don't use any ventilation on my blaster so the pressure keeps building up inside the blaster, so it's understandable that the gaskets start to leak the media.

Yep, mine makes a mess too. I have the vacuum hooked up but if I turned it on, it would almost implode the sides of the cabinet- way too much suction. I only have it on there to relieve some pressure from inside while blasting.

Got a few new and used parts the other day. Progress has slowed a bit. Hopefully I can get some done this weekend.

Great read! Thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome. Yes it was a great read, as I love how all these years later Mitch and crew were absolutely honest and candid about how they felt about those 1993 Kawasaki KX125's. They aren't worried about putting up a front to sell parts. I loved it.

I raced late 80's and early 90's CR125's (stock or with FMF parts), and I always did better on my FMF 1991 RM125. I also purchased and raced David Pingree's 1996 Splitfire/Pro Circuit KX125 in 1997 (Cody Metzger if you come across this and still have the bike, I would love to buy it back) and it was the fastest 125cc bike that I have ever turned the throttle on, even to this day. Just brutal power, yet I still had better race results when I would break out my 1991 RM125.

That article makes me wish that I could swing a leg over a 1991 or 1992 Team Peak CR125. I know there has to be a few McGrath, Lamson, Swink, Buehl, Antunez, Mike Brown bikes out there somewhere.

Your work on your 1993 and 1994 Hotwheels KX125's is amazing. You are so on point down to the smallest of details. It is great to watch your work.

That's a lot to reply to but I hope you fond that 96 Splitfire bike one day! Shame you let it go. I looked up Cody Metzger on Facebook, to no avail.

I love the 90s bikes. Regarding your 91 rm125 and mentioning the 91/92 Peak Hondas: I think that's awesome you can still rip that old Suzuki! I have a '92 RM125 which will be a Swink replica. And I'll be building a '92 Peak CR125 soon too. I have most of the parts for those bikes.

Oh, and yes Pro Circuit has come a long way. Very admirable what Mitch Payton and crew have accomplished.

A little more progress. I had to get the Honda front brake reservoir and Honda clutch perch and levers to make it Pro Circuit correct. Got the throttle (and aluminum throttle tube) dialed in. Installed the MX2 Scott grips too. Smile

Rear brake finished up and bled.

Chain rollers and carb.

Almost ready to mount the subframe. I found a used one on Ebay, stripped the (not powder coated) paint and did a light polish.

Test fitted.

Got the airbox cleaned up too.

Thanks! And yes, I love that bike! I have a '92 KX500 that just might need that same treatment. Wink

Thanks, I hope that I can track it down and own it again also. Once again great work that you are doing on these bikes. I look forward to seeing your work on the Brian Swink replica RM125 when you make your way to that project.

Hey man, your attention to detail is insane. I was wondering what kind of clear you think I should go with after having my swing arm walnut blasted? I am having the powder coating company do it. I just don't have the garage space to do it myself currently. I plan on using a lot of scotch brite pads to clean up the motor, but won't be able to blast it because I don't want to completely disassemble it.

Hi there. Thanks for the compliment. Sorry for the slow reply. I use Rustoleum clear coat for a gloss finish, Krylon for a Matte Finish, high heat stuff for cases, and flame proof for pipes. They all seem to work well.

I suggest the glossy look for the swingarm.

Super stoked to have nabbed this year-correct 1993 Hotwheels/Splitfire PC jersey to go along with my build. Woohoo

Thanks for letting me know! The swing arm and frame should be going to get blasted some time this week. I will be cleaning up the engine with wd40, elbow grease, and Scotch Brite pads.

Oh, by the way, if you're refurbishing a kx125 swingarm, they are painted. You can use a "stainless steel" spray paint. It seems to match well. Although, a nice scotchbrite finish is a nice look. Make sure all your scrubbing lines are perfectly straight.

Thanks Dick! Yes, it is all coming together nicely. I finally got the long-awaited #100 backgrounds from EVO MX yesterday. I will be getting the number plates dialed soon. Smile

I got to the motel super late last night and flipped on the boob tube. I thought this was pretty funny. Will Smith probably burned through all the old pro circuit jerseys and that's why they're so hard to find.

Lol. Yes, I saw a video clip of that show! Crazy how they give them away to non-moto people but us enthusiasts pay an arm and a leg for a dirty old ripped used jersey. I think people should have to pass a moto quiz and state their intentions before buying old gear or rare bikes.

Had to buy the Pro Circuit recommended #6 slide and 1469 needle. Hoping the bike will run how I like my KFC... extra crispy. Laughing

I haven't posted many updates lately. I did get a few things done in the past couple weeks.

Attempting to rebuild the rear shock. (This will be a first for me.) I got the rear wheel together. New EBC race brake pads. A few more decals and the top end is put together. Here are some related photos.
