Hi all as the title states looking for some advice on the centre nut clutch adjuster for the outer pressure plate on my Yz250 its an 82 model bottom end with the 87 topend it has the shorter style Clutch acuator arm without the extra pivot tang at the bottom found on the later models

If i don't tighten the adjuster enough the clutch acuator arm just lifts up out of its housing but if i tighten it enough to stop the acuator arm from lifting up then i can not get any free play in clutch cable adjuster at the lever on the bars

My manual is a clymer for 87 Yz250 but it says to line up the acuator arm with the mark on the case and tighten the center adjuster until it just touches the long push rod

On the 87 this would be fine because the extra pivot point and the recess on the 87 clutch arm would stop the acuator arm from lifting out the case

However on my 82 there is nothing to stop the 82 acuator arm from lifting out of the case other than tightening the the outer pressure plate center adjuster quite a lot to hold the acuator arm in place firmly

If i tighten the center adjuster firmly enough to hold the acuator arm in place the acuator arm is slightly looking towards the front sprocket rather than being in line with edge of the crankcase like it would on the 87 model

So if i tighten the center adjuster enough to firmly allow the acuator arm to stay firmly in place then i have no free play on the clutch cable adjuster on the handlebar lever

But if i tighten the center adjuster until it just touches the long push rod and the acuator arm lines up with the edge of the crankcase i have a little free play in the clutch cable adjuster on the handlebar lever but then the clutch acuator arm just lifts out of the housing on the crankcase

Its a complete new clutch everything basket, inner hub boss, barnett clutch kit, outer pressure plate, new thrust washers and spacers etc all new and installed correctly

So my question is should i tighten the center adjuster screw and nut until the acuator arm stays firmly in place on its own with no clutch cable attached and not worry about having no free play in the cable adjuster on the handlebar, its a new cable and will eventually stretch allowing a little free play

Im sure its the same clutch acuator arm the early 490's and 465's and possibly some IT models

Its same clutch arm used on the

IT250 1981-1983

IT465 1981-1982

IT490 1983-1984

YZ250 1980-1984

YZ465 1980-1981

YZ490 1982-1984

Hopefully someone who has one of these bikes can shed some light on the problem

Something is wrong with you clutch arm/ or case
Yamaha clutch arms should not just lift out
not on the 80-81 models anyway
they will only go in one way, then twist to lock in
close to arrow on the case
and will not lift out
just tested this on a 81 spare engine on the bench

is the pressed in pin(center of clutch case boss bad)?

the pin is in the case( about center of the clutch boss casting section( by drive sprocket)

78-80 CR250's have a tapered bolt to hold clutch arm
where the pin is on the yamaha
