I was out of the sport from 1983 until 2008. Better suspension makes the bike faster overall, not the motor. Jumps make the tracks more dangerous. The consequences of fucking up a jump are huge.

The elite 450 racers can ride the 450s like 125s,they are not fast enough for today's elite pro riders .

not so sure about that, I hear emig saying, I think it was in pulps fly 60 show, that Villopoto and company try to design the 450 engine characteristics to be ridden in lower rpm this help improve how the handling/ suspension works.
Listen to Villopoto's go pro at hangtown the engine sounds almost laboring through some corners but then revs out very quick.
The race teams seem to be having difficulty making that engine displacement and hp work in the in that dimension motorcycle.
A less cc bike setup is much much easier and similar speed, but obviously a 450cc bike can overtake a less hp bike even if the lap times where the same.
Also most 450 riders are using rider aids to control the power.

Assuming the premise is even true that there are more life-changing injuries occurring now, then you have to figure that there are multiple factors involved. The sport as a whole has advanced - amateurs/B's are arguably riding as fast or faster than the pros of 20 years ago, and it's obviously not just because of 450 horsepower. Suspension is light years better, chassis' are better, and racers have developed new techniques and training regimens that allow them to get around the track faster. And of course, track designers have increased the challenges to try to keep up with what we're capable of.

I had my worse crashes on my 125. Fewer on my 250 two-strokes, and fewer still on each successive 450 I've owned. Age/skill/experience clearly played a larger role for me than machine weight and horsepower.

How many mini bike racers go directly to a 250F without a stop in the 125 class? How many teenagers get on 450 early now when back in the day they'd never gotten on a 500 at such a young age?

These factors have to increase the likelihood of injuries.

What about the weight of the bikes? the RMZ is over 240lbs! Riders have if anything gotten smaller.

would you rather crash a 240+ lb bike or one that weighs 213?

Factor in the huge increase in gyroscopic force, engine torque and daredevil track design and you have your answer.

guess what? it's going to get worse.

I was hoping the people who think 450s are too much for SX would surface in this thread. If 450s are too much for SX what is the right size? Also don't we need a 150cc two stroke class in SX as a true support class?
