I'm under the impression the 40gb PS3 cannot play the PS2 games. I have one of the original 60gb PS3s and I can play PS2 games.

It will pop up a message in the top right corner that says "invite received". You can then go to the "envelope" and see which one of your friends are racing where and it you have any invites...
