It could be that Reed figured he'd need the gap to maintain the lead if he ever fell...which he did several times. Maybe he figured that if RC could keep hammering on his bike in the mud to lap an entire field, Reed could keep the speed on his Yamaha without having it mechanical on him.

Reed showed he can nut up in tough conditions. His bike showed it can't. Reed still gets the nod. He did nothing wrong.

A race for the ages that will go down in the annuals of motocross lore.....

I don't think it was the jumping that was the problem that kept him out of the water. Where he blew it imo is blasting through the one DEEP SINK HOLE (left hander) lap after lap. RC even commented "Oh man if Reed could see what we can with all the stuck riders in there, he would try a different line".

I guarantee you that is where he SUCKED the most water in his engine and the Yamadawg couldn't take no mo... :D

But yes great race, I felt bad for a second, cuz he cheated.... <img class= " title="Laughing">[/quote:31pnhews]

X2...looked to me like he was choosing the inside line consistently and taking on the deepest puddles.[/quote:31pnhews]

I think he was taking the lines that he KNEW he could make it past. They may have been deep, but he didn't know how deep the other lines were...might as well go thru the ones that you know you can make! I also think that he was trying to gain a lot of time knowing that the AMA might put a penalty on him for going off the track...although I didn't see any harm in it.
Gained me as a fan, running himself & his equipmet to the brink of destruction. Seems that he would have been concerned about injury, think, what if the bike locked up on one of those wild trips through the air. He showed grit & the voice of reason didn't play into his plan to decimate the field.[/quote:1maswsa5]
