I have an opportunity to purchase a 1979 YZ250 to race in the Grand Prix AHRMA class. I was originally looking to pick up a '80 or '81 YZ250. Can any of you please enlighten me on the relative difference between these models in terms of suspension/motor/handling. The seller believes that the '79 is fairly close to the '80. I thought that the '80 and '81 were closer, '81 with 43mm forks being the major difference. Appreciate your feedback.

My 81 is a 5 speed. I know the 80 is a 6 and if not mistaken so is the 79??? I don't know a whole lot about the 79 model. My 81 is sweet though, motor is a little mild(mostly midrange) and my suspension has been upgraded. Recently picked up a low hour 81 YZ465 which is basically the same chassis as the 250. I'll be leaving everything stock on it.

Thanks for the feedback and link. I believe the 81 YZ250 got "grandfathered" into the Grand Prix class. I will need to double check current rulings. Suspension was evolving pretty rapidly during those years, I'll see if I can get a hold of the specs. And nice bike you got there!

81 YZ250 qualifies under the GP class because it is old style monoshock(non linkage), aircooled and drum braked just as the earlier year models were. Historic classes end around 77-78 with 9 inch travel limit I think. The Ultima class covers your linkage suspension and watercooling as long as it does not have a integrated powervalve or disc brakes. The XYZ guys are good, just difficult to contact sometimes. He has a real job, the YZ stuff as you can imagine doesn't pay all the bills.

That is 1 sweet looking 250.

Tell these 4 stroke guys about the low end that 465 pulls.
With 1 piston and maybe 2 sets of rings a season.............

You guys are correct in that it qualifies for the gp class.I have a 81 250 that I am restoring, but in the mean time, I race my 81 465. I happen to be one of XYZ's riders that race the white yz's. We have raced in the Ahrma series in 06 and 07 and enjoyed every minute. There were several of us that teamed up and traveled together from Fl. and when we did the western rounds, Scott at XYZ had bikes ready to go for us which helped all of us capture championships in GP 500, 50+ Intermediate and Expert clases, plus winning the cross country series also. I also have to mention the suspension shop that I ride out of for all the work that was done in keeping my yz running and handling with no dnf's. TFracing in Myakka City was our race shop where I pretty much lived at during our quest to run the Ahrma series.
I now race in the Fl. vintage series and just got back from Sunsine Speedway in St.Pete Fl. The same location where the AMA Nationals were held back in the 70's.
