Anybody ever use Bupropion HCL, to stop smoking.

I've been taking it for a week and haven't slept much (2-3 hours) for the last 4 days.

I quit three years ago (can you believe it's been that long?)

I used the patch and here is what I learned, both during and after (retrospect)

You're have to do two things, not one.
You have to break a habit, then you have to ween an addiction, and as you know, the habit is really the hard part.
The patch allows you to break the habit. It makes it so you're not lighting up after eating, once you wake, with a cup of coffee, when you drive.
You wear the #1 patch for 30 days, and as we've all read and seen, 30 days is the key time to break a habit. That is the only purpose of the #1 patch, to break the habit, not ween you off nicotine.
DO NOT think you're bigger, badder, and smarter than the patches. Wear it and follow through completely. Don't stop because you think you have it licked after a few weeks.
Once you make the 30 days on the #1, then you step down to the #2 and that is what gets you on your way to weening off nicotine and then finally to #3 and eventually none.
FOLLOW THE PROGRAM TO THE LETTER

Tips:
Drink lots of juices, as the sugars compensate for the nicotine cravings. I also made lots of smoothies and milkshakes.

Start saying to yourself whenever you see a cigarette on TV, movies or in life "I don't do that any more"
Keep saying it. Drill it into your head.
I DON'T DO THAT ANY MORE

Even start calling yourself a non-smoker

But get through the first 30 days, and you're golden

(I know I did not answer your question exactly, but you sound like you're unhappy with your present meds, so here is an alternative)

This is not bullshit, I started smoking when I quit smoking pot.
I liked the smoking part of smoking pot, but did not like the hassle and fear of cops and buying, so I quit, but I missed the smoking part.
So I'd smoke one or two cigs a day and it grew from there to a pack a day.
I never exceeded one pack a day. I smoked for about 12 yrs

Cool.

Remember...habit first
You can't quit nicotine unless you break the habit.

Oh, one last question

Are you over it?
Are you done?
Are you sick of it?

If you're quitting for any other reason, you're fucked
You have to be "OVER IT"
You have to be tired of it and ready to quit.

since i have never smoked "cigarettes", i won't profess to know how to quit. but, both my wife and my daughter quit smoking this year. they used a clinic in st. louis and the effect was immediate. neither one of them has smoked since they were treated.

the cost is $90 and the treatment takes 15 minutes. it's an electronic stimulation of the ears, something like accupuncture but non invasive. they said it tickled some and a little itching, but was painless and easy.

after living with a smoker for 25+ years, i'm very pleased with the results. it was well worth the trip and the money. dbm

Not picking on you, but unless you're totally done and ready to be done....be "over it," you've got a tougher road.

Not saying you can't, but unless in your heart you're done and really want to quit, it'll be harder.

Smoke a shitload of cigs until you puke, like a pack in an hour...that might help

Make you sick to even think of it

I've quit alcohol 31/2 years ago and haven't looked back.
This is harder, but I will do it.

The sleep issues are likely the meds. Talk to the doc...once daily for a week or two and then moving up may be a better plan.

Picking a date is very important. You go to bed the night before as a smoker. You fuggin wake up in the morning a non-smoker. I never smoked so I can't speak from experience, but you should know that the most successful way to quit is cold turkey...just like above.

Good luck to you. Post on the 27th and tell us how life is as a non-smoker. Hell, post every day for a couple of months to tell us how it is as a non-smoker. Like Dave says, you don't do that anymore and the more often you reinforce it, the more likely you are to be successful.

I did the patch, and didn't get any sleep because I was having wild-ass dreams all night.

Quit the patch, no more dreams.

If you do take this route, get you r doc to prescribe Wellbutrin instead of Zyban and you'll save some loot with the insurance co-pay...Generically the exact same drug...The side effects will go away with time. No matter the label it's an antidepressant and it takes a little time to for the brain to adjust. Worked for me, one day I just didn't crave the nicotine...

Flarider is on point with the "over it" mentality. I quit 9yrs ago. I tried a few times, half heartily, before being successful. If its not something you really want to do, it is much more difficult.
I woke up one morning with my girlfriend at the time, had a bit of a coughing fit, coughed up some disgusting wad, looked over at my half empty pack, and said never again.

I didn't use any thing besides a crap load of gum. I did relapse once while drinking and took a drag off a friends cigarette, but immediately felt like a failure. I've never looked back. Now smoking is actually pretty nasty to me. I can tell you honestly that you will never feel better than about 6 months or so after you quit, and realize how much of an affect putting smoke in your lungs actually had on you.

Good luck man. Remember the only way your addiction can be fed if you feed it. So starve that f'er. Smile

I'm a poor old retired Vet., I get my meds for free.
I just started going to the VA, and let me tell you they are a great bunch of people.
I feel guilty for being treated so well, for the little I did.

That's cool..hey if you served, you served! Hope all works out for you. The drug did work for me and I experienced some side effects in the beginning also. It was weird, I just slowly stopped thinking about needing a fix and then poof, I didn't need it at all. It took about 3-4 weeks to take effect but it really worked for me.

I quit about 20 years ago. I quit a half dozen times - the longest being almost a year - but always seem to slip back into it.
In my case I had to drop beer at the same time to finally get over the hump. I tended to drink with friends who smoked, so once I had a decent buzz going I would bum one and light up. The next day I felt bad, so I did it again, etc. Madness really.

Sunflower seeds have something in them that helps with the nicotine cravings, plus they give you something to do with your hands and mouth. A lot of the habit part is behavioral as Dave said, so finding things to take the place of the smoking ritual can be helpful. In my case digging for seeds and spitting shells seemed to help.

Good luck to you on this. You'll be happier without 'em - and at $4-5 a pack you'll have some spare change left over too.

When i quit, i went to costco and bought a box of 200 otter pops, that deffinatrly helped. Unfortunately it only lasted 9 months, i have quit 3 times and everytime its about the same time frame, 8-9 months.

I really need to quit for good, but with all the other shit i am going through, its really tough.

Yeah I got the same thing from the patch too. Flying dreams every night. Just lift up my arms and float wherever I wanted. It was kind of cool. I hadn't had those kinds of dreams since I was a kid.

Here's a trick for the patch. The ones I used had three steps. I looked at all three steps and the only difference between them was the patch gets smaller (but the price is the exact same). Just buy step 1 patches. Then when it's time to move to step 2, start cutting them in half. Same again when it's time to move to step three.

Just fuckin quit. Be a got damn man.

Addiction is BS. It's a sympathy plea to give people a reason to keep doing something.

Take candy away from a kid, he'll quit crying after a few minutes.
