My son, at college is putting in new clutch stack. When it is all together there is no real clutch. It seems as though the pack stays together. He sent a video and I can see the pack moving together as a unit instead of separating. Any thoughts? Hubs look okay although I am not there to actually see them. I am asking him to check a single disk of each to make sure they slide easily and smoothly on the hubs. But why would the plates not separate?

Thanks,

Rich

My guess is because he didn't soak them in oil before he put them in!

Believe he did. At least he mentioned he bought Chinese food so he could use the round container for soaking. LOL

The CRF250 uses an anti judder spring (I think thats what its called) on the inner-most clutch plate. Basically the inner-most friction disk has a larger inside diameter to fit the spring in there, and if you replace this special plate with a normal one, the clutch doesnt work.

I didnt know about this when I replaced my clutch the first time and ran into the same problem.

As far as soaking them in oil? As long as they have a coating of oil on them when you put them in, theyre fine. Clutch plates dont "absorb" oil by soaking them.

I understand that, what Im saying is to have him look at all the clutch plates individually and be sure that he placed them in the right order. Like I said, the inner-most clutch plate is different than the rest of them. Its an easy thing to overlook if you dont know about it.
