In 1979 I got a Bell Motostar III and the first race I went to I endoed in practice promptly breaking in the new helmet. Since then I have put a small scratch on all new helmets before wearng them.

Stupid practice or can you relate?

In 1989 I got a new bell moto 4 and had it custom painted by Troy Lee. I waited for like 5 weeks for the delivery of my new painted lid. It was awesome!!! Went to the races the next weekend and wore my old helmet during practice. Took off the line for my first moto wearing my new awesome lid and crashed in the first turn, getting my head ran over and my visor ripped clean off my helmet. I wasn't hurt in the crash, but I sure was pissed about my new helmet getting hit!!!!!

Whenever I get a new helmet the first thing I do I give it a light throw across the lawn. Just enough to have it roll a couple times.
I've had my current shoei for about 3 years and haven't had a good crash with it yet. The worst I've done it just wash out and maybe have a little bounce off it.

About 15 years ago, I bought a new white Shoei, had it custom painted, got it back from the painter on a fri before a race, and crashed my brains out in practice and roached the shit out of it! Lucky for me the painter raced with me and fixed it, but it was never the same

Wow I'm glad I'm not the only guy who suffers from this. My most recent helmet purchase a Fly Carbon resulted in a get off in the whoops on the first lap wearing it. Broke the visor and took a footpeg to the backside of my brand new lid, gouged it up pretty good. This was after wearing a Shoei for 10 years without even putting a scratch in it.

I laugh at scuffing a helmet first.. Doesn't make sense. Then again I've yard saled more than anyone I know so it's gonna get trashed regardless.

I wore my brand new out of the box for the first moto shoei fonseca helmet and brand new red white blue tld gear at a race in St George around 2003 for a mud race and went face first into a pond sized puddle on the first lap. The gear always had stains and the helmet was soaking wet all day. Had to wear my old shitty gear and helmet all weekend, which I should have done because it was a mudder all weekend.

Back in the early 90's I saved all year to buy a new Bell Moto 5- first time wearing it I endoed and the bike landed on my head and the foot peg went through the helmet....so upsetting!

Anyways, a new helmet gets scuffed the first time I get roosted!

If your not crashing your not riding hard enough. I get a new helmet just about every year.

Do I have to include the inevitable drop to the concrete garage floor upon removing it from the box for the first time? Shocked

I had a new Arai Windham helmet. Went to Red Bud and some dude rolled a double,
then let it eat down the back side. He was throwing roost, (w some rocks in it} .
I ducked my head and a rock took a big gouge out of my helmet.

I bought my first real race bike in 2008 and a new helmet with it. First ride out I had a slow speed tip over and the helmet visor snapped off. . . Most disappointing way to burn a new helmet.

So your avi isn't just witty ......

No issues with helmets butt (see what I did there) I do hate it when half way through the moto you notice cooler than usual air surrounding you crotchal region and it becomes noticably easier to unlock your hips.

Well sorta. My first year riding, I went down EVERY time that I rode. Didn't ever go down hard per se but I was always tweaking radiators and bars. Oddly enough, I hadn't wrecked in probably close to a year until this last race and even that one was just a tree root in a corner that just washed my front end out.

brand new 6D last year first lap out i tipped over in the muddiest part of the track, nothing major but it was a bad omen for that helmet, took a few pretty good diggers and one KO this year and actually cracked the helmet and my leatt too

replaced it with a new 6D, gave it a whack on the ground before i put it on and i havent had any serious crashes since

i guess im a bit superstitious,

I had a brand new Moto 8 about 5 years ago. I went to a race and dropped it in the parking lot for good luck, it broke the whole raised back portion that those had. I also ended up crashing that day and scuffing the paint, man I was pissed.
