Deer Hunting/Hunting

My grandfather ownes a hunting ranch (muley's, Elk, Bear, Mountain Lion)...and I grew up around it (and around hunters that flew in from all over the country to hunt there). I've killed big game (elk and deer) in the past (ate every edible piece of them)...but no longer hunt.

I enjoy every single aspect of hunting, right up until you have to kill the animal. I just don't like to kill things (I don't mind eating what other people kill though)....

I TOTALLY see the appeal of hunting...just not the killing (and I completely understand the necessity of it). I don't see much fun in celebrating after killing one of these beautiful animals. But, I respect and understand those that do.

Although it's not something I personally want to do, I can also understand the appeal of it. For 10s of thousands of years the male has gone out and hunted. I think there's part of that programming is still present in most men. I used to love playing around with air rifles and making my own bows as a kid too. But these days I couldn't bring myself to kill something unless I was in a survival situation.

Aside from that, in the UK at least we simply have to shoot deer for conservation reasons. Given the way deer breed I should imagine there are similar conservation issues in parts of America too. If you don't shoot some of them the population goes out of control and then they end up starving to death horribly. Though admittedly that's a different thing than sporting/entertainment reasons. But the two are often linked.

Like I said, I have nothing with other people killing things...and I love eating the food they killed. Much respect to you for at least honoring the animal you've killed (and you aren't alone...a good percentage of the hunters I've guided on my grandfathers ranch felt the same way-moment of silence for the fallen animal type of stuff. And I respect them to no end.)

Much respect to you for at least honoring the animal you've killed (and you aren't alone...a good percentage of the hunters I've guided on my grandfathers ranch felt the same way-moment of silence for the fallen animal type of stuff. I'd never been deer hunting till last year. About 5 or 6 years ago a friend got me into traditional archery and hooked me up with an old 55lb recurve bow. After going to a number of 3-d archery shoots and just generally having fun shooting the bow, i set aside the time to do the late archery hunt. I haven't had that much fun in a long time! I felt like I was a 12 year old boy again, trying to stalk and get in front of deer to get a nice under 30 yard shot. I finally did it, hitting the smallest doe you have ever seen (hey, I wasnt going to be picky for my first deer). Anyways, not a succesful hunt. When i released my arrow the deer jumped forward and the arrow hit the middle to the back of the animal, not the kill spot i hoped for. Little bitch ran to the next rise, looked back at me then ran off. I THOUGHT I made a good clean hit and didnt give chase. Long story short, It ran off and i never found it.

This year, I'm a little more refined. Better arrows, better camo, better scouting of good places to shoot from. More patience, less chaseing. I have my plan...

We got there Wednesday night and went right to sleep after dinner. Thursday morning the boys got up early went scouting while I set up camp. They got back late, all jacked up saying they know where the bucks are and that they have a plan.

I didn't go with them opening day, because I felt I'd slow them down. Their plan was to have Chris summit to 9,900' while Aaron waited at about 9,500' and Chris would walk down threw the Manzanitta and scare the deer towards Aaron. Well..... you don't scare deer, you stalk them.

After all their work they had scared the deer down the mountain and watched a lazy fuck on a quad shoot their buck. They came back to camp all discouraged and Aaron felt like quitting. I let them know that sitting in camp was no fun either and that we'd all start fresh in the morning.

Instead of summiting, we cut across the Manzanitta at 9,500' and just sat and watched. Deer sleep during the day and we were sitting right in their bed. After about 15 minutes this buck raised his head up to take a peak. Aaron says he's a nice buck, but all he can see is his head. I told him.... well, shoot him in the head. We set their while Aaron squeezed the shot off and watched the buck fall back to sleep for good. Perfect shot, right in the neck of a 5x5 buck at 200 yards with my 30-06.

Meat hunter first......horn hunter last but I do enjoy being selective.

Meat hunter first......horn hunter last but I do enjoy being selective.
