So checking for a stretched frame would be by checking the wheel base?

Axle center to axle centre with the rear at min or max.

I believe they are torn down and measured...

Meant for the average joe checking out s/h bikes, though I doubt to many average joes are indeed stretching frames

How to stretch a steel frame.

1) Be the first one to get a yz400f among your buddies.

2) go riding out in palmdale after a rain with your buddies, and make sure they invite their buddy who is an ex 80s local pro that never rides yet is still faster than everyone else and, of course, hates four strokes
3) have your friends continually push him to "just try it"
4) whatch in horror as said fast guy launches your new thumper into orbit repeatedly off 6' man made berm, landing on flat ground from well over 20ft straight up, and back down to the ground with a dull thud.

No tape.measure needed after that...Sad
