Motocross: the smallest sport in the world?

Forget it being a mainstream sport, it most likely never will be. It's an action sport. Don't bother trying to force it to be mainstream, ball sports will always be the most popular and to many in the public motocross is a novelty. None of that's saying it's a bad thing because it's completely understandable, it's an expensive sport that can cause injuries and fatalities where as with football or basketball any kid low on money can pick up a ball and try and make something out of it. From the outside moto is probably a sport that looks strange and ridiculous, many of us think that about other sports. Motocross isn't the only sport in the world guys.

Why? The truth would piss too many people off and theyd all get offended.

You compare pics of 70s mxers and todays and you can see it kinda looks like a joke instead of the worlds toughest sport.....regardless of how hard it is physically and mentally.
So the riders arent even considered athletes.

At least no more than a spelling bee on Espn or a chess match.

Sports Illustrated recently had an article with a link referencing moto as Circus Skillz.....with a Z.

Its looked at as a sideshow. Crazy daredevils. You tell someone you race dirt bikes and they respond with
Bro...can you backflip?

If sportscenter ran a piece saying Joe Schmoe signs 8 year 150 million dollar contract with YamaKawaHonZuk it might get attention and looked at as something more than a monster truck crash and burn show.

MotoGP was/is looked at as more a sport simply because of the amount of money.

There is no money in this sport and the ones making it are unknowns.
The local guy at the convenience store doesnt have a clue who #2 is on the Monster drink cutout of a guy on a bike taking a checkered flag.

That guy would be more well known after he quits, then starts a hunting expedition and gets on TV shooting Elk in the Yukon Territories.

"You race dirt bikes? My friend had a dirt bike when we were kids and I burnt my leg on the muffler."

People have no clue that there is a sport or a lifestyle that revolves around dirt bikes. I raced SX and Outdoors for 9 years and one year in Europe and my wife still doesnt think its really a "sport". She tells her friends its my "hobby" i did in my 20s.

Gardening is a hobby. Fishing is a hobby.

See....thats how it is.

Pro fisherman make more than most moto. Its like golf.
I always figured mookie was going to go fishing instead years ago.
The money was probably better for them then also.

I cant see it being a "sport" in an athletic sense either.

I think MX athletes in the 70's being sponsored by cigarettes and beer companies is a joke. At least now they have Specialized, Muscle Milk, etc. etc...

Also, most kids who went to normal schools had some sort of experience with a stick and ball sport. I think that's why they're so popular is because people can relate and they know what its like to throw a football etc. That's why so many people have heard of MC and not RV. Bikes weren't 8 grand when MC was racing and a lot of people rode and could imagine what it was like racing SX.

To the non-fan, the only time MX gets any exposure is when a kid dies or is badly injured at the local track.
To the casual fan, MX means X Games. Adding "Extreme" in front of every non stick and ball sport has ruined a lot of diffrent sports.

Last year when they brought in NASCAR personalities and tried to make SX appeal to a broader adience, a lot of people here complained about trying to turn it into NASCAR. You can't have it both ways.

Oh, I agree. Personally I could care less how popular or mainstream it is as long as the races are on tv. When you get too big trying to appeal to too many people it loses a lot of its luster yo more hardcore fans(see nascar).
