Repacking 2 stroke silencer, best material/technique for quietest exhaust note

My YZ125 and my son's CR125 are both equipped with Pro Circuit pipes and shorty silencers. Both are pretty freakin' loud so I want to try to quieten them down some (before resorting to installing a stock silencer). My question is, what is the best material and technique to use to make the short silencers as quiet as possible? Should I pack it extremely tight or kinda loose? Should I use a particular brand of packing or something like steel wool or fiberglass insulation? Or are they all gonna be pretty close to the same? Or am I wasting my time trying to make a shorty Pro Circuit silencer? Can I even to hope to get it close to the sound level of a stock silencer?

Try the repack kits from Moose Racing. They are a little more expensive but they are super easy to install and will definitely quiet down your 2 smokers. We used them in our Superminis and now in our YZ125...we have the FMF Shorty.

Thanks. I've heard that packing the silencer slightly looser will lower the exhaust note (at the expense of not lasting as long). Anyone else hear this?

Sounds right. Deflects the sound, but would wear from heat and the constant pressure faster.

I've used 4 stroke packing loose wrapped, seemed the best solution for me. Stays quieter and lasts much longer, 2 stroke stuff seemed to burn through quicker when loose wrapped. And the 4 stroke one I used was like a sewn blanket and not stringy, not sure of the brand name now. Been too long and my old ass can't remember, good thing I have hour meters on his bikes!!LOL
