I am looking at getting a full on race machine. I currently own a KTM 625 sxc. I have done a few hare scrambles but I want to try my hand at mx. A friend of mine is moving back home and he rides a good bit. I like the simplicity of 2 strokes and I believe that is what I want to get. Not sure if a 125 or something like a 150sx is too small. I am about 180lbs and 6'3". Just looking for some guidance from you fine people. thank you

I would probably get a 250 or 300 if your gonna get a 2 stroke. Your tall enough, you have experience riding. The 250 will be even easier on parts and you won't have to work as hard keeping it in the power range.

Wow, you think so. You dont think that will be a big first step? I havent been on a 125 in a long long time but never on a 250. I guess I need to try and just check one out. Any brand preference, I am familiar with KTM but not opposed to others.

If you're riding the KTM on any kind of a regular basis, the 250 will be manageable and the 125 will feel light but slow IMHO.

You are about the same size as me and I totally agree that the 125 wont be enough for you. Are you buying new? If you plan on doing MX, but still want to ride off road...look at the KTM 300 XC (not the xc-w) Really good on the track and off road

Man, I would love to be able to purchase a new bike but it isn't in the cards right now. I was planning on spending no more then about 2500k. I definitely plan on doing a fair amount of mx and enduro. If i were to trail ride with my buddies, it would be on my 625, I love that bike and it can get me to the trails. I have two friends that literally ride every weekend, and then some on days after work. I feel like, even if the 250 or 300 or whatever was a bit too much, I would be riding it a good deal so I would get used to it. I just remember my dad telling me one time to never move up in bike unless you can ride the bike you have to its limit; I never did ride that 125 to its limit. That was a long time ago though.

What do you think Sunday?

Heck, I can't ride todays 85s to their limit and I'm an okay rider. A 250 or 300 though can make riding a lot easier and more fun.

I used to always subscribe to the "never move up in bike unless you could ride the bike to it's limit" idea. But as I got older, I realized that it can be a little bit of a misleading statement. Like you said, you never rode that 125 to it's limit, and I am sure that what ever bike I was riding 125, 250, 250f, 450f....If I thought I was at the limit of the bike, Ryan Villopoto, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, ANY of those dudes would get on the same bike and ride circles around me! haha. So yeah because of your weight/height get at least a 250 and you should be good. I don't know what the prices are like where you are, but with $2500 in SoCal where I am, you could find a decent 250 2stroke and just ride it and have fun

Alright man, so I don't come from an mx background but I have to say that the bike is frickin awesome. It handles like a dream and has made me such a confident rider. I am signed up for a race at the end of October. If you are about my size then I would say a cr125 or something comparable is a great choice. I love mine, I rode my friends crf250 an 08' and it is super smooth but I honestly prefer mine because of the weight and the power band. Super fun.

Thanks for the scoop. I had a 125 yz about 15 years ago and it was by far the funnest bike I ever owned. Decisions decisions.

Get a cr250r they are very reliable and I think that you will be kicking yourself in the butt when you buy a 125 and want to step it up a notch
