Getting back in the game! Need advice!

Edited Date/Time 3/9/2013 10:22am
Hey all first time poster here! I used to race 85s ALOT when I was a kid and loved it but was forced to walk away. Just now got to a place where I am financially able to race again, so Im going to give it all I've got this time..

I plan on racing the 250 class and buying 2 bikes. That's where I need advice, I was thinking a non EFI 250f for practice/back up and a newer 250f with EFI to have really built up as a racing machine. I plan on moving up to B class relatively fast once I start, maybe even start in B class if I'm fast enough.. Do I need/would a bike with EFI be more competitive for racing? I know this seems dumb but ive lost all contact with everyone I knew In this sport and just want an opinion of someone whose doing it.

It would be something like a 2004-09 kxf250 and a 2011 same thing. Or would i be ok with no EFI ? Plus I hate jetting, but what are the downsides if any??

Always had yamaha's and I probably won't take that route this time.. Nor will they be KTMs.

Anyways I'm excited to start this and also to be a new member here! Oh yeah and I was also wondering is the AMA requiring neck support now?? I'm in district 17..

Regardless of what you get. I would buy one new bike from the start. Race it and practice it from the start. After it starts getting tired, it may be a year, make it a practice bike and buy another new one. That way pretty much all parts will interchange.

That's pretty clever. I've already given thought of having 2 bikes that share parts, seems more sensible.

I just can't seem to justify buying new. Actually I easily can.. IT'S NEW! And only mine so I know it can be trusted. But on the flip side these bikes will be ridden very aggressively, given everything they could ever need and more while being rebuilt @ very regular intervals. Maybe what I'm saying is the cost of new isn't a factor, I'm just thinking it could be money better spend on a used 2010-12 bike with tastefull work already done to it and budget for alot of rebuilds/performance etc? Versus starting with a new bike from the ground up.. Hmm I'm very unsure haha

I really appreciate the advise please keep it coming guys!

If you wanna go race 250F's at a decent level, and are back on the pace, do not buy a second hand 250F. You are only asking for trouble. If you got the cash, buy new. Another option for a practice bike is a 450. Make great practice bikes, for the fact that the motors make plenty of power and are ultra reliable, and you can get plenty of hours out of a motor before it needs a rebuild. Then leave the built 250F as the race bike.

Would It be hard to transition from a 450 on practice days, to a 250f on race days? (even if said 250f is built)

I've ridden both, and there is obviously a big difference.. Would the 450 make me get lazy Is what I'm wondering? I've ridden a 09 yzf on the track at the badlands in Attica, it was great but I like really working bikes harder for power over having all that available power in any gear or whatever- hence racing lites..

Almost makes me wonder if a new 250f to build and a late 125 might be the doctors prescription? Ugh. What would a 125 need now a days to run with the 250s besides a proper rider and suspension? Good thing my vans shot atm because I haven't come close to figuring things out for this very rapid approaching season that I'll likely miss part of

I race both 2 strokes and 4 and the 125 cant do much in the 250 class unless i ride the hell out of it. If you want a practice bike and a race bike id buy a 2011 or newer off craigslist and then buy a NEW one for race. Now as far as the 450 practice and the 250 race. id say go for it, i like to practice on my 250 2 stroke and 450 more than my 250f. ive noticed after i ride the 450 i tend to ride the 250 harder,
