Jabroni, Here is what I say you should do. Instead of spending $40,000 on nice car, by a 1998 Honda Civic for $10,000 and spend the other $30,000 on a real dog.

Do you breed those or something?

Those things are awesome. Like machines!

Do they make that weapon but with a doberman kit?
No, I don't breed I just have one (which is my second). They are crazy cool dogs but it certainly takes special person and lot of commitment to own one, and really most people shouldn't. Mine come from a sporting background which is a different temperament then those used in police/military work. Maybe you should put one or two on your list. http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Non-Moto,21/If-Shit-Hits-The-Fan-SHTF,1241888 They will pull their weight a little better than a French Bull Dog or Pug, that is for sure.

I have two rescue dogs now. One is 14 years old, and the latest is a golden retriever mix that we picked up in Apple Valley CA this spring.

I am in my mid fifties and I have had dogs all my life. Most were dogs that we picked up from either a shelter or the pound. All have grown to be a very important part of our family.
Yeah, that is exactly what I said. I said I was looking for a dog that wouldnt be part of my family.

That is why Im going for a bulldog, which is about as much of a family dog as you can get. They arent good for anything else.

Fuck people are uptite about this subject. If I wanted to get a dog from the shelter I would have started a thread that said, "got any good shelters you can recommend".

Pretty dogs!
Thank you! We have a good time. They are spoiled completely rotten, and know how to get their mama to cave in and give them treats all day.

Honestly

If you have had four dogs that haven't worked out, there's a very good chance that you aren't the type of person that needs a dog period.

Dogs take a lot of time and commitment, and they are what you put into them.

And why do you think you are speaking to someone that doesnt already know a dog takes a lot of commitment? Ive had dogs before. Im not hear asking for pet raising advise. Ive had plenty of dogs that worked out fine, NONE of them came from the pet shop or pound. And judging by the fact that I want a bulldog, that should tell you I want a dog that requires minimal commitment, as they are VERY low maintenance. I got a 22 year old gf, she's all the high maintenance I can handle at this point in my life, a pound puppy would be the death of me.

My families dogs while growing up
doberman #1 - breeder - awesome dog
doberman #2 - breeder - awesome dog

sheep dog - breeder - awesome dog

dalmation #1 - pet shop - hell
dalmation #2 - pet shop - hell

(side note, we knew a local breeder that we could have got an awesome dalmatian pup from and we passed because of the price, big mistake)

fox terrier -- breeder - awesome dog

My dogs as an adult either with roommates or my own
pug #1 - breeder - awesome dog
pug #2 - shitty breeder - dog was a bit retarded but turned out fine in all the other aspects

pit bull #1 - breeder - awesome dog
pit bull #2 - same breeder - my all-time favorite dog

black lab - rescue dog - hell (owners fault)

Friends dogs that I spent enough time with
pug - breeder - awesome
pug - breeder - awesome

pit bull - rescue dog - spook

mutt - rescue dog - hell
mutt - rescue dog - hell

Out of all that, I'd say there was only one case where I felt the owners were shitty and largely responsible for the issues of the pound puppy.

I know that dogs are what you put into them. But so are dirtbikes and you wont see me buying a used 4stroke because I dont want someone elses problems. I prefer to start with a clean slate. That should be evidence enough that Im the type of person that puts in the work right the first time and wants things done the right way, whether it be a dog or a bike.

The next time someone is looking for a new 4 stroke, Im eager to see if he gets this kind of uproar for not buying used. Well, I guess all 4 stroke buyers have to deal with the 2 stroke mafia so maybe the upheaval is pretty consistent.

If you are looking for a good companion, or a dog that would be part of the family, look into rescuing a dog. There are plenty of good dogs out there with out a home.
X2 or whatever other number will get you to rescue a dog instead of perpetuate the mass breeding and puppy farming that is detrimental to the dogs health as well as the main reason so many wonderful dogs are killed because no one will adopt them.

You also don't have to think of rescue dogs as only shelter dogs.

There are specific breed rescue groups.

Here are some SoCal rescues for pugs and bulldogs

We have 2 fantastic rescue afghan hounds, and we work with the Afghan Hound Rescue of Central Ohio

I think our afghan hounds are Coptic Christians. I don't discuss religion with them, though. (Not polite!)

They have close to zero body fat, so they don't swim too well, but they love to play in the mud!

They live to run, and were bred to chase things down and kill them. Ours do a good job of that!

Nice links. I checked em out, there are some alright looking pups in there. And I have no doubts that quite a few probably came from some good bloodlines. I'll keep those in mind. Actually, I will go give them a look to be honest. But if the dogs exhibit any of the psychological traits Ive seen before then I will quickly pass.

I know a lot of you are really happy with your rescue dogs. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. My friends get pissed whenever I point out the odd behavior of their rescue's. People fall in love with a pet and they will justify anything just the same way they do with their punk kids. It's human nature or a part of American culture I guess. No big deal, its just not for me.

I wont even order a dog from a good breeder if the dog needs to be shipped. Much like the pet store or the abandonment issues that Ive witnessed with rescues, the shipping process is very traumatic and cruel if you ask me.

Thanks for the links though. I'll go check them out. I like saving money as much as the next guy. But I also like starting with a clean slate. You wont see me adopting a human when me and my chic decide to have a kid for many of the same reasons Im not in favor of adopting a dog. I dont buy used motorcycles anymore either, sorry. My reasons dont discount any of the positive reasons for adoption, they just outweigh em in my eyes.

The only one problem my dog has is loving people and other dogs too much, she gets fired up about meeting folks or dogs for sure. My dog is truly awesome, I laugh in amazement just about every day at something she does. We were on the island and a group of about 15 kayakers show up, she was running around meeting everyone, kids were giving her snacks. At one point she started running and cutting front flips and sliding on her back trying to show off. She did it one time and slid off into the river. All the kayaks were tied up and she decides to run across the top of the kayaks. She made it about half way before falling in. Glad i didn't judge my dog by the first meeting. She had just had surgery and was real timid acting. I walked her around the field at the shelter. She was very unsure about me. The Shelter was like a jail, no air condition, all the other dogs barking and growling when we passed. I didn't get paid for a couple days so i asked them to hold her, I was a bit worried that she wasn't the right dog for me, I wan't impressed at all. I also kept in mind she was a day out of getting fixed and may not feel good. My thinking was, this is the dog i picked, we are sort of connected, how could i leave her in that bullshit place? Anyway dogs aren't like getting an RC car or some other toy, I feel you get out of them what you put into them. When I picked her up a couple days later she jumped into my truck like she owned it, she loves to ride! Totally different dog than the one I met a couple days earlier.

Looking hard at getting SweetPea a buddy, I want a Doberman I think, we have some pit bull rescue places around here, I may get an older one people pass on older dogs. I'm cooking chicken on the grill so SweetPea goes into this look at me I'm working for you I need chicken mode. I think she was someone's squirrel dog, she'll do some laps run back to me and stop with this check me out I'm working look on her face, then take off again. She's laying on the couch with her head down just looking at me now, I know she's trying to figure out how she's getting some chicken. I usually pick her some of the bone, she don't get bones or much in table scraps. I have redneck friends who give their dogs anything, freaks me out. I bought SweetPea on of this huge cow bones thinking it would last her a while and she destroyed it in on night, got stopped up, I don't even give her rawhide now. She got a pig ear stuck crooked in her throat and squealed one night, I had to reach in and pull it out. What do y'all give dogs for teeth cleaning? I give her milk bones and sometimes those dental stick chews. I was think about getting her a toothbrush and just brushing her teeth.

I just got this email from The Burner, just wanted to pass on the info if anyone can help....

I took this dog from Anza CA where he was dumped a few days prior - to a San Diego Shelter on Sunday 9/16 after spending 2 days camping with him IN my RV. He's very behaved and loving. He is not doing well in the shelter. They won't put him up for adoption. He's been through a lot. He didn’t like our dogs (they are too hyper for him) so I recommend he go to someone who does not have a dog. He's fully trained. I have until Friday 9/21 at 530 to adopt -then neutered and can be taken home after that. If I don’t get him, he will be euthanized next week.

IF you know of ANYONE who is looking for a turn key dog... this one is really nice.. He's just not good in the Shelter or with hyper other dogs like mine. He lived with us in our RV for almost 2 days– slept with us, walked with us, ate with us --He is NOT Aggressive at all.

I'm too far away, my dog gets pretty fired up around other dogs. I hope some one gets him.

This is so sad man, the look on the dogs face in the 2nd pic....fully breaks my heart. Hope someone steps up, just wanted to try and spread the word.

How about that TV commercial w/ the Sarah McLaughlin song? where all the animals have been abused...damn i have to change the channel every time it comes on. Animals/pets (especially dogs) are so rad, how anyone can even think about abusing them makes my blood fuckin BOIL!

Still miss my Service Dog Ian every single day of my life, i keep his dog tag on my key chain.

...OH and speaking of dogs, two of ours (the family black lab and my lil mini-pin) got freakin skunked in the backyard late this evening!! peeeee-uuuuu They are reekin bad and have to spend the night in the garage, they are so bummed out. Blink

Damn im fully rambling...cant sleep, so it looks like im in for another insomnia'ridden night! Woohoo
9/19/2012 5:49am
Sorry you can't sleep man, I never had a dog get skunked i bet that would suck! man i would take that dog, but first thing SweetPea will do is run up on him WFO trying to play. It's her only problem over enthusiasm, freaks other dogs out sometimes. She skips the butt sniffing and goes straight to play time.
