Dog Breeders in Southern California

Im thinking of getting a puppy soon. Anyone have some experience and/or recommendations for breeders?

I would prefer to keep it local. That way I have a chance to see the kenel and whatnot.

Im currently undecided on the breed... It's gonna be a bulldog of some sort: French, English, or Dutch (Pug).

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Pugs are sweet little dogs, I've heard they are hard to train though and I can't remember ...but it seems they have a health issue that's common to the breed. I know you said you are interested in bulldogs. If you do decide to look at other breeds. Check out labs...I have a yellow lab and he's been great, super loyal and very protective. My brother inlaw had an english Bulldog and he was an awesome dude. They don't live real long 10 years or less. He was a good boy though!

I had an english bulldog that my family got from a breeder in socal. I'll look up their info if you'd like. I do have to say that the unfortunate thing is that english bulldogs do have their fair share of health issues and do not have a long life expectancy. I have german shepherds now, and can not say enough about how amazing they are.

Get a hound dog ,then enjoy having the best dog ever ! My 7 month old black and tan is smarter than any dog i have ever had.He has had 4 different german shepherds give him a whoopin at the local off leash dog park and he still loves other dogs and especially people . Any dog will be awsome if you give them the time they need to develop theirs "manners".

From Autauga Co. shelter, SweetPea the most awesome smartest dog ever. Seems like the more you pay for a dog the more medical/mental issues they have.

Ive had pugs in the house before. Yeah, they got that stubborn streak in them, they are bulldogs after all. But they aint really good for tricks or training anyways. You get em for their unique personality, cause it sure aint for their looks.

Not a fan of labs. Too easy of a dog for me. To vanilla a personality. Great dogs, just not for what I want.

German shepards are another GREAT dog. Just not for me. If I was to go German, I'd get a doberman again. I love em. Smartest dogs on the planet. Shepards are right behind 'em if not equally as smart. But Ive never had my own bulldog and so that is what I got my hopes set on.

The health issues can be minimized by proper care, breeding, and exercise. I believe that most breeders are not good ones and most owners dont really keep up on the proper physical activity for their pets.

Pugs have similar health issues to English Bulldogs and I never encountered any of them in the past with any of the ones Ive known because we always took really good care of them. Or we got lucky. 4/4 seemed like more than luck to me. I dunno though.

Get me the info to the breeder you once used. Were you happy with the dog you got? What was the price?

My chic wont go for the hound. My uncle had em. I kinda like em. I love beagles. She wont even go for that.

So no hound-type breeds.

Im already getting a pass on what Im naming the dog if its an English (Mr T) so I dont wanna push my luck with her any more than I have too.

If you buy a "expensive dog" for cheap, yeah you are asking for health issues.

It seems the cheapest you can find a healthy bloodline for English Bulldogs is $3500+.

You would want to steer clear of a beagle for sure, too many issues between not listening and severe separation anxiety issues.I have always had the freebie ditch dogs that nobody wanted and it seems if you spoil the shit out of any dog they will be your best friend.

Jabroni, Here is what I say you should do. Instead of spending $40,000 on nice car, by a 1998 Honda Civic for $10,000 and spend the other $30,000 on a real dog.

Get a rescue dog.

You can find rescues for just about any purebred dog breed, and you will find anything from senior adults to puppies and everything in between.

Unless you are going to do the dog show thing, I encourage people to go the rescue route.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I cant stand rescue dogs. They are about as bad as the dogs you find at a pet shop.

All sorts of social behavior issues, insecurities, and just plain skittish in my experience.

As you can see, the dog breeds Im in the market for can easily be found with health issues if they dont come from a quality breeder. If I go get a rescue dog that is any of the breeds Im looking to get, then Im not only going to get a spook of a dog, but also a very expensive one.

If Im going to pay the money anyways, I'd rather do it up front than at the vet.

If you are looking for a good companion, or a dog that would be part of the family, look into rescuing a dog. There are plenty of good dogs out there with out a home.

Ive had em, my friends have had em. Nightmares IMO.

I dont need a headcase for a companion, I got enough human friends like that. Every dog Ive ever had experience with that was a rescue dog (4) was a basketcase.

I like to start with a clean slate. Raise the dog the right way.

I'll put my rescue dog up against anything you got, she hunts squirrels, learns commands unbelievably fast. She's going to start doing dock dog competitions soon. What a dumb bunch of statements, My Boss has a 3000 English bulldog that he's invested at least 10,000 in, ligament surgeries, cancers etc. What kind person tries to discourage folks from getting rescue dogs? Maybe you need to work on your owner skills, some of the smartest, loving most awesome dogs come from shelters.

Ive NEVER had an issue when getting from a good breeder and always had or seen issues with a rescue dog. That is just my experience, its not a rule of thumb. But can you really blame me for being gunshy given my experience with 'em?

This was my blue heeler.She was a rescue dog and i never had any problems with her.She was easy to train and was an incredibly smart dog

I wanted to rescue another one after her but my wife and son snuck out on me and got a golden doodle.They are great family dogs and are also easy to train.This is one of the best dogs i ever owned.

Dogs do take after their owners, which is why Ive never had an issue with a dog I had from the start.

You act like I kicked your dog or something. I dont like pet dogs or rescue dogs. It's not that big of a deal to get so bent out of shape over.

Besides, how am I wrong about my opinion. I stated my experiences with these types of dogs. My friends with rescue dogs would argue the same thing you are, that their dog is great, meanwhile it is huddled in the corner afraid of its own shadow.

I got no problem with anyone else that wants to rescue a dog. It's just not for me. Been there, done that, over it. That shouldnt offend you and if it does, get a life.






And lets not compare the "smarts department". You live in bumfuck Alabama. Not exactly the hotbed of intellectualism.

I've got 2 German Shepherds. 1 is a retired narcotics sniffing pup that I actually rescued. The other I got from a breeder. They both rock my world.

Ive NEVER had an issue when getting from a good breeder and always had or seen issues with a rescue dog. That is just my experience, its not a rule of thumb. But can you really blame me for being gunshy given my experience with 'em?
You do have a point, I've had rescue dogs that weren't as super genius like as SweetPea but they always turned out to be great dogs. Being a grouchy old loner like I am I spend a bunch of time with my dog. Anyway you do have a point , I got fired up it was like you were dogging out my kid. lol. You can get a messed up dog any where though. No lie Sweet pea has never chewed up anything or got in the trash ever. She wont even eat her food until i say eat, I gave her a piece of chicken meat the other day and she offered it to the cat before she ate it. I am guilty of spoiling her a bit, but it's cool not like she's a working dog, she's my bud.

Stereotyping shows you aren't that smart, some folks are just born smart. There's not too much I can't figure out or fix, i am a Super Genius. You make up little stories and speak them as truth, odd. My dog is actually afraid of nothing, she amazes me every day. She's really good at knowing what you want and gives her all to please me. I've had her go back and do commands 2 times because she is so into it.

If you aren't looking for a dog that would be part of the family then maybe you don't actually need a dog.

I have two rescue dogs now. One is 14 years old, and the latest is a golden retriever mix that we picked up in Apple Valley CA this spring.

I am in my mid fifties and I have had dogs all my life. Most were dogs that we picked up from either a shelter or the pound. All have grown to be a very important part of our family.
