Now Jones fights Machida on September 22.

Its a little surprising Jones turned down the Sonnen fight, being most would think it would be an easy win for him. 8 days notice is not a lot of time to switch opponents, and its a no win situation for Jones. If he wins he beat a 185er that hasn't beat a 205 guy for many years.

Yeah, see that now. Didn't know it when I posted.

You're right, a no win situation for JBJ/Sonnen, and you know how those fights can get crazy. Would have liked to see that fight though.

JBJ/Machida rematch will be cool though.

Jones is a frikkin animal, but hasn't really been hit good, and wondered if Hendo would be able to get one in on him.

Would like to see Silva step up a class and give him a try.

I don't blame Jones one bit! Dana thinks he can just throw anyone in there and they should fight. It's on Dana IMO, .....he didn't have to cancel the event. There have been many cards on pay per veiw that weren't championship bouts!

Hendo wouldn't have made it outta the second round anyway!

@neverwasfastenuf

I would like to see Jones fight Sonnen also because I'm pretty sure he would destroy Sonnen. And even though I like Chael, think he's funny and enjoy his bogus trash talk at times, it goes against everything traditional martial arts is about.

Machida looked awesome against Bader, I love his style and I have changed my traditional Muay Thai to copy it, I think Jones is going to most likely be too much for him again.

It would have been interesting to see if Hendo could put him away with his big right hand, as Jones has shown he is willing to stand inside and bang at times more than he needs to.

I don't think Jones or Silva want to fight each other, but Silva vs GSP is probably going to happen next year.

I think they would have had to find 2 other big names for the main event to keep 151 scheduled, otherwise nobody would have bought it. The under card was very weak to begin with. JMO

It is a huge bummer for the other guys on the card.

Edit: The more I think about it I think Jones should have took the fight with Sonnen, it would have saved the card and at the end of the day Dana is his boss.

Greg Jackson is a very structured trainer, he develops a game plan months ahead and the whole training cycle is based on that.

Sonnen is a one dimensional fighter and doesn't care who he fights. Hendo even said Chael's wrestling was probably the best out there. Hendo stalks you down and throws the right hand, totally different and probably worried Jackson about how different these guys were.

Jones is heading down the road of Rashad and will be losing fans over this.
I find it pretty sad a married man with a pregnant wife at home gets caught crashing his car with 2 young women in the car with him. Not somebody who should be put up on a pedestal in my opinion, and inking mega million dollar sponsorships.

I think something like this is exactly what Jones needed to earn back the respect of his fans after the DUI. Taking a fight on short notice was the perfect opportunity to earn that respect back, and he passed it up.

The fight may have been 8 days away, but after media obligations, Jones would have only had 3 days to completely change his game plan to go against the best pure wrestler in the UFC. I can't say I blame him for turning down a fight that would have been lose/lose for him.
I also find it strange that people are giving Jones shit for turning down Sonnen on short notice, but no one is saying anything about Machida turning down Jones on the same timeline (for the record, I don't blame either one; championship fights shouldn't be short notice bookings).

Thats like telling a football team friday afternoon that "I know you thought you were playing the bears this sunday, but were gonna change things up and youre on your way to detroit." Your game plan changes, esppecially in UFC where there are so many different dimensions to each fighter. Sonnens interview makes him sound like a douche though. I hope when the time comes, and they do finally fight, Jones knocks thee shit out of sonnen.

Can't blame JBJ for refusing as far as I'm concerned.

It could cost him millions in the long run by fighting and possibly losing to Sonnen.

Although Sonnen wouldn't have any time to prepare, I don't think he would have been affected as much as JBJ for this quick change. I think JBJ would have won the fight but Sonnen would have come out like a wildman and anything can happen, Sonnen had nothing to lose by taking this fight, and JBJ did.

Listened to the video OC posted up (thanks by the way for that), is Sonnen really the highest paid fighter in the UFC?

Didn't know and never would have guessed that.

He is talkin about his ass (as usual) Here is the full card payout for his fight vs Silva:

Pretty sure the highest paid used to be GSP (250k show + 250k win) Surprisingly i think Lesnar was paid the same.

Here is where it gets tricky, some (very few) fighters get a % of PPV, those are the guys that make big bank. Most of the fighters make more from outside sponsors.

Anderson Silva: $200,000 (no win bonus)
Chael Sonnen: $50,000
Silva def. Sonnen via technical knockout

Forrest Griffin $275,000 ($125,000 to show, $150,000 to win)
Tito Ortiz: $250,000
Griffin def. Ortiz via unanimous decision

Cung Le: $150,000 (No win bonus)
Patrick Cote: $21,000
Le def. Cote via unanimous decision

Demian Maia: $96,000 ($48,000 to show, $48,000 to win)
Dong Hyun Kim: $44,000
Maia def. Kim via technical knockout

Mike Easton: $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Ivan Menjivar: $13,000
Easton def. Menjivar via unanimous decision

Chad Mendes: $36,000 ($18,000 to show, $18,000 to win)
Cody McKenzie: $10,000
Mendes def. McKenzie via technical knockout

Habib Nurmagomedov: $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Gleison Tibau: $31,000
Nurmagomedov def. Tibau via unanimous decision

Constantinos Philippou: $32,000 ($16,000 to show, $16,000 to win)
Riki Fukuda: $28,000
Philippou def. Fukuda via unanimous decision

Melvin Guillard: $72,000 ($36,000 to show, $36,000 to win)
Fabricio Camoes: $8,000
Guillard def. Camoes via unanimous decision

Rafaello Oliveira: $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Yoislandy Izquierdo: $6,000
Oliveira def. Izquierdo via unanimous decision

Shane Roller: $46,000 ($23,000 to show, $23,000 to win)
John Alessio: $10,000
Roller def. Alessio via unanimous decision

Chuck Liddell used to get a LOT more than 200k per fight.

Yeah, I gotta agree here. We shouldnt be so hard on Jones for turning this down.

Sonnen is jumping in and pretty much making a showdown between them. Chael is a great promoter of fights. He's doing what he does best now.

Apparently Machida has backed out of the fight now and Vitor Belfort is fighting Jones on September 22.

Chuck Liddell used to get a LOT more than 200k per fight.
Chucks last contract was 500k flat, no win bonus and a % of PPV, impossible to speculate what it totaled in the end, but was upwards of 4mil or more per fight.

That is correct Scottie.

I remember GSP saying he makes 4 to 5 million per fight, and I am pretty sure Anderson Silva makes even more.

Edit: Here is some more info on that.
