So, I'v decided I'm going to do mx and I have a few questions!
What type of bike should I get as my first one? I'm a girl, 5'3.
What do I need to know about the bikes?
Is there a book I can read on them?
certain kind of helmet i should get?
Shoes?
outfit?
any websites or stores you reccomend?
Anything will help!
Thank youu(:

Given your height you probably want a small wheel 85 (Either a Yamaha YZ85 or a Kawasaki KX85). If you haven't ridden a whole lot you should look at a Honda CRF150R, it a four stroke that is more 'rider friendly' than the others I listed.

Two-Strokes like the KX and YZ have tight power bands that need you to keep the bike in a certain rpm range to go fast. (if you aren't in the power band the bike is really slow and will jerk a lot)

Four-Strokes like the CRF have very big power bands that don't really need you to be precise to go fast. I've had both a 85 two stroke and the 150 four stroke and the 150 was much much easier.

You can probably find a book in Barnes in Noble or you can look for tips on MX from youtube.

You want a DOT approved helmet (It will have a white sticker on the back). Brands like Fly, Fox, MSR, O'Neal, Thor, One, and Troy Lee Designs all make good helmets. The best are brands like Shoei, Arai, or AGV but they are up in the $500 -$700 range.

In MX you have boots to protect your ankles, any of the first 7 brands I listed above make good boots but the best are Alpinestars, Gaerne, SiDi but like the helmets, they are really expensive.

All the first set of brands I listed make riding gear but Fly and Fox make more gear for women. (only change from men's to women's gear is the color.)

Just type in the brand name and .com afterwards. Works most the time but a few are different and need 'racing' after the brand name.

***A NECESSITY FOR MX IS A NECK BRACE... IT HAS SAVED MY LIFE TWICE SO FAR*** Two top companies are Leatt and Alpinestars.

Good Luck!!!

You should go to a local race around where you live and spectate if you haven't before. Most mx people are pretty helpful with a lot of free advice as how to get started. You will also want to do "ride days" or "practice days" at a local track several times before you start racing. Racing can be pretty hectic. You want to be comfortable on a track with other riders before racing. It will make it a lot less likely getting injured.
