I personally don't think it's about 4 strokes.

One issue that exists today (yet is impossible to do anything about) is the intensity at which everyone rides at. In Jeremy's day you had 3 or 4 fast guys just as you do now - but even they didn't ride so balls to the wall as the modern SX rider in 6th, 7th or 8th etc. The new style is all about aggression and attacking everything on the track with 100% commitment the whole way. It's a riding style that takes big risks. But you have to ride that way in order to finish well. Intensity shouldn't be confused with speed. Yes, they are going faster now but it's the level of intensity these days that's insane.

Look at the way today's top amateurs like AC and his closest competitors attack the track, scrubbing everything in sight, the risks they take. They see the top guys do it and so they have to do it to.

In a way it's unavoidable. The sports got bigger and bigger, and more and more professional. It's much more publicised these days to. The rewards are greater and there's dozens of kids all over the world both bog amateur, semi professional and professional who are determined to be the next Chad Reed or Ryan Villopoto.

I think racing a 2 stroke on todays track might be more dangerous than in the past. The tracks all use a different layout because of the 4 stroke power and the 4 strokes make the track break down in ways that are much different than when it was strictly 2 strokes. Going back to the good old days of 2 strokes only might be safer but I'm not sure that racing 2 strokes against 4 strokes is safer for the smokers.

I'll beat this can of dead worms because I love motocross but I hate getting hurt.

I thought he did a fist-pump over the finish line jump and had a bad landing.

For all that supposed "Power", it kind of looks like it was more dangerous for the Fumpers when they had to race with faster 2 strokes... Kind of like fat kids in a footrace, apt to trip and be trampled.

Getting lapped is quite dangerous, so when Kevin Windham and Sebastian Tortelli on their 4-Foopties got lapped here, along with all the other Fumpers, they were really in danger until the leaders on the 250's went screaming past them for the second time.
