Hi Guys - I'm sure this is just like the 'which bike' question, but any help you guys can give would be much appreciated.

We just had our first baby and have been using my parents Nikon D40. I love the camera and am tempted to just get the same one, but want to make sure I'm making a good decision.

Any suggestions? I'll just be taking pictures around the house, but would also like the option to know I have the arsenal in the bag just in case I do take a trip somewhere.

Thanks in advance for you input.

If I were in your shoes I would probably want to take some video as well. If that's the case...for the same price as a D40 you can buy a canon T1i or T2i that takes very nice photos and video to boot. Im am pretty much clueless on anything Nikon but I am sure you can find one that's in the same ballpark as the canons. These cameras all have plenty of power for any kind of photography that you can think of.

The D40 is old technology. for $649, you can get the d3100 and lens. It sports 14mp over the 6 of the d40 or the D40x which is 10 mp resolution.

The D3100 had HD 1080p video recording to record videos of your baby as well as pictures, more frames per second, Dynamic lighting, video editing and a lot more features over the d40. I would suggest this option. You could go with Canon but if your parents have lenses for their d40, you can always interchange them.

A review of the camera click here

The Canon T2i and T3i are more expensive, but have 18mp, a flip out video screen and a better video implementation but again more expensive about $100 more. Good luck

I have a D90 and my friend has a D40. We haven't done any in-depth comparison my opinion is they are basically the same. The D90 has more bells and whistles but if you got a D40 and a good lens or two you got a nice setup. If you insist on upgrading without draining Jr.'s college fund I would recommend a D90 (which also shoots 720p video as well).

I thought I would get a lot more advice or suggestions here.............

Either way - for those of you who did take time to provice me your suggestions I very much appreciate you taking your time to help me.

I went with the D3100 since I was already familiar with the D40. So far so go!

Thanks again guys!
