Troy Lee Designs on Top of the World at Glen Helen USGP

The final round of the 2015 Grand Prix series was held at the famed Glen Helen circuit over the weekend. Riders jetted in from around the globe to put an exclamation point on a long series that has stretched across multiple continents and seen some wild results. The Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Red Bull / KTM team has never been one to shy away from a good race, so Jessy Nelson and Shane McElrath signed up to take on the best MX2 riders that the world championship series had to offer.

The GP format features timed qualifying on Saturday, followed by a qualifying race, which determines your gate pick for both motos on Sunday. It was obvious right away that the TLD boys meant business as Shane logged the fastest qualifying time and ran away with the win in the qualifying race. Nelson had some issues in the qualifier but still earned a good gate pick. Both riders were focused and ready for business on Sunday.

Racers and fans were greeted by scorching heat on Sunday and a track that was rough and rutted from the previous days events. The motos would prove to be a challenge for man and machine as they raced up and down the treacherous Glen Helen terrain. In the opening moto, Jessy and Shane put their KTM power to the ground and rounded the first turn in second and third, respectively. Nelson wasted no time moving to the front and laying down fast laps. Shane moved forward as well, but a few late-moto mistakes would relegate him to third at the checkers. Nelson rode a flawless race, however, and was never threatened as he ripped his way to a convincing opening moto win.

Moto two was more of the same for the Troy Lee Designs squad. Jessy Nelson pulled the holeshot this time and cleared out before he had even completed the first lap. This time Nelson's teammate, Shane McElrath, refined his riding and latched onto Jessy's rear wheel. The duo put on a riding clinic for the GP regulars and posted a convincing 1-2 finish for first and second overall on the day. It was a dominating showing for the team and the two riders they are counting on to lead them to race wins and titles next year.

"This is just exactly how you want race day to go," said Nelson after his first GP win. "My starts were good all day, the bike worked awesome and I was having a blast out there. It was really cool to race with new riders and experience the GP's right here at home."

Shane enjoyed the experience as well, saying, "This was really cool. You can't ask for a better way to end the day than you and your teammate on the top two steps of the podium. I didn't know what to expect coming into this event, but I'm glad we signed up."

The Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Red Bull / KTM team now sets their sights on the Red Bull Straight Rhythm event coming up at the Pomona Fairplex on October 10th. Be sure to come watch the TLD team take on the best supercross riders in the sport at one of Red Bull's unique events.

The riders wore the 2016 TLD SE Air Caution White/Navy racewear, along with the 2016 SE3 Reflection White Helmet.
