Spokane, WA (July 17, 2012) - -The MotoConcepts Racing tractor-trailer pulled into the Millville, Minnesota track known as Spring Creek under the eye of hundreds of racing fans who had arrived early to watch their hometown hero Ryan Dungey. Inside the tractor-trailer was the MCR450 piloted by Mike Alessi, MotoConcepts Racing team captain, that has been the only challenge to the former National champion.
As the gate dropped for the first moto, the fastest racers on the planet rocket down one of the longest start straights of the year into the fast right-hander. “Got a great start, was coming making some passes but really swapped in the whoops trying to get Jake Weimer,” explained Mike Alessi. “I just wanted to get out front and put as big of a fight as I could.” After a grueling back and forth battle, Dungey was able to make the pass. Alessi would eventually be passed by Jake Weimer and but 3rd place did not sit well with Alessi.
With 40 riders charging into the first turn for Moto 2, Mike Alessi found himself behind a host of riders. Determined to improve his results in Moto 1, make less mistakes and ride smoother, Mike searched out great lines and flew past riders quickly moving into 2nd. With local legend Ryan Dungey already out in front the home crowd would not witness the close racing with Alessi as Moto 1 had produced but Mike knew it was important to stay close, finish strong and 2nd overall. With another 2nd overall, Alessi remains firmly in command of 2nd in the standings as the series.
MCR teammate Vince Friese had an impressive day despite less than stellar starts and the appearance of an oddity in scoring. With hard fought battles in both motos, Vince had to work his way past riders on the rough and sandy circuit. Vince would score points in both motos with a 17th in Moto 1 and an improvement in Moto 2 finishing 16th. A secondary glance at the overall standings, with AMA points scoring, reflects an odd 17-16 for 20th overall.
In the Lites class, it was Jake Canada once again doing what Jake Canada does best; starting mid-pack! As one of the hardest charging riders in the class, and also one of the largest riders in the class, Jake Canada could podium if he could ever start up front. “Mr. Consistency” once again rode the wheels off his MCR250 to finish just behind the factory riders in both motos. If points were paid out for passing, Jake may well be in the championship hunt, however, as it sits he remains one of, if not the, fastest non-factory riders and again finished inside the top 10, where he sits, predictably, in 10th in the overall standings.
Overall, Millville was a great day for the fans and MotoConcepts Racing. The series heads to the Spokane, Washington-based MotoConcepts Racing home track at Washougal where the team will be actively involved in several industry events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
