Honda Racing - MX1 Race Report, Round 8 Teutschenthal Germany‏

Bobryshev finishes top Honda in tough German GP Mistakes cost Honda riders dearly in the opening moto at Teutcschenthal. Only Evgeny Bobryshev of CAS Honda had an incident free race aboard the CRF450R, as he piloted the machine to 8th place in front of a huge crowd at the East German track. LS Motors Honda rider Tanel Leok got the worst of it as failed to get away cleanly. He trailed the rest of the field by over 20 seconds but set about reeling them in metronomically. The Estonian express caught and passed two thirds of the opposition on what was a valiant ride to 10th position, but by that point the tank was dry and he was forced to settle in that spot. His team mate, Guarneri, in contrast had made a good start, running as high as third, but a mistake dropped him out of the top 10 and a finish of 11th, behind his charging team mate, was all that could be salvaged.

Martin Honda rider Jimmy Albertson and CAS Honda rider Gareth Swanepoel looked threatening in the early stages, but once again costly errors for both saw their respective challenges fade. Swanepoel crossed the finish in 13th and Albertson in 15th, five spots ahead of his Australian guesting team mate who finished in a respectable 20th spot in what was his first World Championship moto. In the second moto the Honda contingent faired better with Guarneri displaying the kind of form that earned him fastest lap of the weekend during the Qualifying Race but it was CAS rider Swanepoel who had got away best in 5th. Leok had endured another poor start and was faced with the up-hill challenge of making his way through the field once more, just as he did in the first moto.

Martin team mates Albertson and Ferris had started well, the in-team competition present for the first time this year, provoking a spirited show from the two rookies. As the race developed, Guarneri started to push home favourite Max Nagl on his KTM for 6th position. The smooth-styled Italian eventually claimed the place with only a minute left on the clock before the 2-lap board came out. Bobryshev was only a few seconds behind in 8th, and pressing in the closing stages. This is where they would finish, with Fellow CAS Honda rider Gareth Swanepoel rounding out the top 10. After that it was 12th, 13th, 14th in the shape of Leok, Albertson and Ferris respectively.

Three Hondas in the top ten overall classification is a successful result, but the pace shown by all those aboard the CRF450R indicated that podium spots were within reach this weekend. Bobryshev finished top Honda in 7th overall but all will be hoping for more consistency at Round 9 in Latvia next weekend.
Evgeny Bobryshev, CAS Honda (7th overall) “It was an awesome day and I am happy with these results because the last two GPs had not gone so well for me with DNF’s and bad finishes. I was pretty sad after France because I had thrown away a lot of points, but it is getting better again. The track was quite good but hard for passing and if you pushed really hard then you could have a big crash. There were big bumps and ruts, so it was not easy. When I was really pushing hard my legs were off the bike each corner! In the second race I really wanted to pass Nagl in the final part of the race but it was not possible; overall though I am happy. We have some good points and everything is positive for the next few races.”

Gareth Swanepoel CAS Honda (10th Overall)

“I feel pretty good after today and overall things are starting to come up. Last weekend in Lyng was good and so was this Grand Prix. I qualified tenth and was happy with that, as I managed to keep in touch with the guys ahead. Today was positive with some good starts. I was running tenth in the first one and unfortunately had a small crash and went back to thirteenth. The second moto was tough because the track was so bumpy. I was a bit disappointed with myself on the first few laps, but once I got going I put in some decent lap times and managed tenth. I think Latvia will be really good for me. It is a bit sandy and loose and I’m looking forward to it.”

Dean Ferris, Honda Racing MX Martin (16th overall)
“It was gnarly out there and really rutty. You have to try and flow and that’s hard for 40 mins. First moto was tough but for the second moto I changed my gearing and it seemed to work well. The bike had more torque and this suited my riding style. I have loved my first taste of World Championship competition and would certainly like the chance to ride again. There are a lot of positives to build on.”

Jimmy Albertson, Honda Racing MX Martin (12th overall)
“It was good to finish some motos as I haven’t done so since Portugal. Was real nice to get some points under my belt and run to the end in both. My fitness is good but not where it should be as I haven’t been able to train as I normally would during my injury. As for the track, I really liked it and found it easy to pass. There were tons of lines and guys were making mistakes all over the place. It was tough running but real good fun and it was great to be back on the bike.”

Davide Guarneri, LS Motors Honda (9th overall)
“It was a strange day. My speed was not so bad, but I’m not so pleased with the results. The first moto was sort of on/off. I made way too many mistakes, especially at the start of the race. On top of that I stalled the bike and later I crashed. When I could push, things were okay. So given the conditions I could not have hoped for more than eleventh. In the second moto my start was not so good, but I was chasing Philippaerts and fought for sixth with him.”

Tanel Leok, LS Motors Honda (10th overall)
“I feel a bit gutted to leave here with tenth overall. Especially because my fitness is okay now and I didn’t mind the rough track so much! In the first moto me and Cairoli touched and my brake pedal was completely bent so I had to stop at the bottom of the hill before the second turn to kick it out. But even after that it was still not right! On the second corner of the second heat I crashed again. Philippaerts came over the ruts, we came together and then someone else ran into me. Again I was last and had to come back! I had a good rhythm but I collided with Swanepoel, went down and after that I had some problems to get the bike going again. Hopefully I will have more luck in Latvia!”
