Is it presumed that the current administration inherited our situation? I would say that they fought, clawed and climbed their way into this position and therefore did not inherit anything. They won the election they did not inherit it. By saying they inherited anything, they are simply trying to say "hey it's not my fault" Now while I agree that it is not their fault, they need to accept responsibility and change the language they use. By continuing to use language like this they are deepening partisan divisions ans worsening our situation.

Six days after taking office, Obama kicked off an event on jobs, energy reform and climate change with "a few words about the deepening economic crisis that we've inherited." He lamented announced job cuts at such economic mainstays as Microsoft, Intel, Home Depot and Caterpillar, among others.

Just over a week later, Obama, arguing for his stimulus plan, said that "we've inherited a terrible mess," and a few days after that, in the economically depressed city of Elkhart, Ind., he told the audience, "We've inherited an economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the Great Depression."

They say you can't solve a problem unless you take ownership of it (i.e. responsibility for it).

They did "inherit" it. Look up the word in dictionary and see what it means. The current administration did inherit the current economic situation.

Wonder how this would work for a doctor?

I'd say it works better than the alternative.

Ownership doesn't have to mean that you are responsible for having caused the problem.

For the doctor, it means he takes responsibility for working towards a treatment plan that gets results, and he takes responsibility for attempting to achieve a good outcome. It doesn't mean he gave the patient the germ or the defect that caused the illness.

For the problem solver at a job it means taking responsibility for solving the problem. it doesn't mean you caused it.

For a politician, it means accepting that you've inherited the problem, that it exists, and that it's your responsibility to deal with it.

Whether you're a politician, a doctor, or someone at a job, it doesn't mean pointing fingers and blaming people. At least not if your goal is to solve the problem.
