I've had my model 870 for 35 years, and it's been a great gun.

My current 12 ga. is a Charles Daly..

I hunt Duck, Geese, Turkey and Deer with it.. It's been a great gun!

I just saw the 887 in the newest American Riffleman mag, and said I have to have it..

Very nice.
Question for you Rob, I've been shooting all my life, but never once needed or really even wanted to shoot a slug from a shotgun, we hunt with rifles around here.

The question is, does the choke the shotgun have matter when shooting slugs?

I've just always had a hard time wrapping my head around slug shooting.

I just found out this past winter that they now have rifled slugs. I bought a few and shot them out of a 20 gauge single shot and a 12 gauge 870.
I could not believe the difference between them and the old standard slugs.
Much more accurate and a ton more velocity. They even sound like a rifle, a very BIG rifle.

You can't use a choke with a slug.

And Larry is correct, rifled slugs are the best!

I'll take pics of what I use after a while.

If I may add my .02 here....If you have a shotgun that you can get extra barrels for and you really want to shoot slugs, I'd look into a "slug barrel" for it. Hastings makes a good selection for a variety of brands. Fully rifled bore instead of just the choke. You can mount a scope on it if you like. When you want the scatter gun again it just takes a minute to change back.

Those 870's are hard to beat! I've had one myself now for 30 years or so. I've hunted small game and waterfowl with it and shot both trap & skeet too. Great shotguns!

I shoot an Ithaca, and have 2 barrels for it, one for upland, and one for water fowl/turkey.
I have no need for slugs, I just wondered if I could shoot them with a modified choke.

Just never wondered enough to ask anyone.

Thanks though.
