Has anybody spotted Jeeps being used as tow vehicles? I now have one and am pondering whether or not to try to tow with it.

It depends on which motor you have in it.
Unless you have the larger 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine I wouldn't recommend it.

Also if it is an automatic transmission be careful what you tow because you can overheat the tranny.
Most vehicles that have a factory "towing package" have a transmission cooler to avoid that problem.

MPG would suck more than my truck towing.

I know thats not what they are known for but I've seen a 'tow package' option on a few of the new ones. Right now I use my dad's H2 for a 6x12 but when I go off to college I'd like to think I don't have to borrow someone's truck or have to go out and a van.

If you are towing a 6x12 loaded with bikes and such I wouldn't use a Jeep to tow it.
Unless you are talking about the Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 V8 I would recommend you grab a pick up.

i towed a 6x12 trailer with a 72 inch snapon toolbox and the rest of it packed full from charleston SC to LA. then pulled it from LA through the rockies up to 14000 or so feet and all the way back to indiana with no trouble. it was a 99 grand cherokee 4.0. never had any problems. went through ice storms, 1 foot of slush in the high elevations, and a blizzard all the way across the plains! and on the way it was over 100 degrees through texas and 120 in the CA desert.

I wasn't by any means saying none of them can do it but I haven't heard great things about the 6 cyl Jeep engines and towing.

I had a friend that had a 2000 Cherokee with the 4.0 and his tranny fried due to overheating halfway down to Florida from CT.
Basically towing the same set up as you.

Luck of the draw I guess.
