My dad has two old double barrel shotguns that he has had for many years. He's old and codgety now and these guns have gotten to the point that they are starting to deteriorate. I'll put them back in the cases and he'll take them out. I'll offer to have them cleaned and detailed and he'll have no part of it. It's to the point I'm about to go buy a couple guns and swap out with his just so I can get his restored before they suffer any real damage. As it is they are gummed up/dried up to the point nothing operates on them. Not being much of a gun enthusiast, I'm searching for any info on these, values and tips on refurbishing them correctly or any leads on someone that does this.

Here's the details. Inscribed on the barrel of one is the following. V Bernadelli Gardone VT. Also, acciao speciale cogne, and Made in Italy. This would be the "side by side " version, lots of intricate engraving.

The other, an over /under version. P Beretta Gardone VT, acciaio speciale al cromo molibdeno, Made in Italy. Again, lots of intricate engraving.

I'll try and get some pics if it helps. Hopefully I'll learn something. Ask me about an old Elsinore, I can help! Old guns......clueless! Just don't want to screw up anything especially if these have any real value. So thanks in advance for any advice.

You might want to look into them If I remember Bernardelli Shotguns are expensive. Depends on a number of things but some of the high end Italian makers are Hundreds of thousands.

Or contact Benelli/Berrettas US headquarters in Accokeek Maryland. They have a section that does restoration for customers.

Normally the SHot guns with detailed ingraving that are older were very expensive and the engraving was all done by hand.

A good side by side or over under Berretta could be worth $600 up to $60,000

Yeah, some of the Beretta stuff is pricy! Found one on the net for $120,000.00, yikes. Looks like this one is in the $5,000.00 range though, probably from the early 50's. I found a pic of one that appears identical to my dad's Beretta.

My opinion is that, unless your Dad has actual mental problems, stay away from his guns. He knows what he has and it sounds like he clearly doesn't want you trying to send them out to restore them. The things are not going to suddenly rot away sitting in a case. Maybe you could sit down with him one day and let him teach you how to apply a little CLP to them?

Nothing too mental, just a touch of Alzheimers kicking in. Somedays more than others. There's an outside chance he'll be having a conversation with the garbage man one day and will give him the guns and I won't have to worry about them. Considering all the projects I have, that wouldn't be a bad thing.Smile
