Results Sheet: Indianapolis 2

Wow, what an unusual night in Indy. But unlike last year’s full-moon race in Jacksonville, we can’t blame it on the lunar calendar. Still, we had two riders in the top five in the 450 class who either didn’t qualify for the main event (James Stewart), or score minimal points (three for Kevin Windham after a crash and DNF in the main). We also had a single-file restart in the 250 class after a red flag. Yep, it was a little odd, to say the least.

Supercross Class Main Event

A quick note before we hit the start in the main, to explain that last week’s winner, James Stewart (Toyota/JGRMX/Yamaha) was MIA from the main event after James went down in the heat race, and became the bottom of the pile with a couple other riders, including Kevin Windham (GEICO Honda), and Jarred Browne (Rock River Yamaha). Once everyone was extricated, the Asterisk Mobile Medical crew lifted James off the track, and onto the Medic Mule. After undergoing concussion testing in the medical rig, the decision was made to sit out the rest of the night.

Mike Alessi had the early jump.

When the gate dropped for the main, Mike Alessi (MotoConcepts) grabbed the holeshot, followed by Justin Brayton (Team Honda Muscle Milk), and Marvin Musquin (Red Bull/KTM). Where was series points leader Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki)? He was in the middle of the front half of the pack, in fifth after the first lap. Afterwards he told us that it was tough making forward progress, because the track was so slick that it felt like the harder you tried, the worse things went for him.

Ryan Villopoto worked his way past Brett Metcalfe just past the halfway point.

Up front, Mike led the first six laps before giving way to Justin Brayton. A lap later, Villopoto moved from fourth to third, behind Team Yoshimura Suzuki Racing’s Brett Metcalfe. It was lap 11 before Villopoto got by Metcalfe, and he later admitted it wasn’t the smoothest pass, though he’d gotten bucked in the very gnarly whoops just before entering the 180-degree right-hander where he and Metcalfe got together. By lap 16, Ryan made a move in the same corner where he passed Metcalfe to get by Brayton, and take over the lead.

Justin Brayton led ten of the 20 laps in the main event.

Kevin Windham had been in fifth for much of the main event, and was looking to go by Mike Alessi, but the two tangled and Windham hit the deck hard. He was unable to return, and only scored three points for his efforts. Kevin had also had to qualify via the LCQ, after his heat race crash.

Davi Millsaps (Toyota/JGRMX/Yamaha) had made his way from eighth spot early on to the final spot on the podium. Metcalfe settled in at fourth, and he was followed by Cole Seely (Team Honda Muscle Milk), Mike Alessi, Marvin Musquin (Red Bull/KTM), Broc Tickle (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), Weston Peick, and Nico Izzi (Star-Valli Rockstar Yamaha).

Ryan currently has a 54-point lead. But that's over a currently inactive Ryan Dungey, so his closest active pursuer (at least we expect he'll be at the next race) is James Stewart who's 69 points back. If he doesn't make it to Toronto, then the closest active guy would be Davi Millsaps, at -95. That's nearly a four-race lead. So then you'd be looking at a race or two before he wraps it up, not six races.

Supercross Lites

This main event was really in two segments. Blake Baggett (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) was the leader at the end of lap one, and he had his hands full with Red Bull/KTM’s Ken Roczen, who took over the lead on lap two. Series points leader Justin Barcia? He was just inside the top ten.

Lining up the pack for the restart.

They managed to make it lap four before a red flag that was brought out for a crash with Kyle Cunningham (Star-Valli Rockstar Yamaha). While they initially started to reload the gate, they opted instead to use a procedure in the AMA rulebook for restarting a main event by lining up the riders on the start straight in the running order and throwing a green flag to restart them. Roczen led a couple more laps, but tossed it away, and Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Blake Wharton took over the top spot, followed by Darryn Durham (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), and Justin Barcia, who’d made a ton of progress. That’s how they finished. It broke Barcia’s string of four straight wins, and gave Wharton his second Supercross Lites main event win.

Blake Baggett was fourth, and he was followed by Jake Canada (MotoConcepts), Justin Bogle (GEICO Honda) who’d crashed early on; and Matt Lemoine, Tyler Bowers, Les Smith, and Shawn Rife.

Barcia still has the series lead, with a 22-point gap over Darryn Durham, and a 23-point margin over Blake Wharton.

So what’s next for the Monster Energy Supercross series? A trip north of the border to Toronto, and we’ll be there, so be sure to check back on Vital MX.
